Here is a Tuesday tech tip on tie downs. Don’t be that guy barreling down the freeway with the front of his mattress pad sticking straight to the heavens because you have a single bungee cord across the middle. Strap’er down good!

You don’t have to go crazy creating a web of bungee cords and rope to every mirror and bumper because you aren’t sure what “good” enough is. Just give it a good tug to make sure your load is secure.

If you don’t happen to be a Oracle Team Rescue Captain, or a trucker, and your knots are a bit rusty, use a ratcheting cinch! They are quick, and get reeeeeeal tight (don’t go too tight).

I prefer a flat cinch. You can get the strap through low-profile cracks. In my case, between the roof rack and the sand ladders. Only key with the flat straps is to make sure they lay flat and tight, or you will sound like a whoopie whistle going down the freeway as the wind makes the strap buzz (-100 overland cool points).
