Bay Area, CA; Slick Rock Trail - Difficulty?

Slick Rock has gotten much more difficult over the last 5-10 years. Your rigs should be capable of the trail, but it definitely takes some offroading experience to avoid damage. I agree with the above suggestion to run Corral Hollow (specifically the eastern section) first, Slick Rock is...

    Lighting up Camp

We have two Luci Lux's. My daughter loves them, and they have enough battery power to run all night as a nightlight.

What knife/utensil kits are you using?

I use a plastic tub similar to @Steve. Years ago I found a discount price on high quality re-usable plastic cutlery but people keep throwing it out on trips so I'm going to get a set of metal cutlery from Goodwill. If I was backpacking I would look into light weight options, but since it is...

    2018 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Diesel

@adventureresearch, how are you liking the ZR2 so far? A local dealer is asking $41k for a double cab diesel and I'm somewhat tempted.

What Camp Saw Do You Use? (Non-powered hand saws)

For camping I use a saw and a hatchet. The saw is used to buck down a log into pieces that fit in the fire pit, and the hatchet is used to split wood for kindling. In my experience a good saw cuts faster than an axe and wastes less material. I have a Sven saw, but don't really like it. The...

Greetings from the SF East Bay

Welcome to OB! I just got back from a trip to the Lassen/Shasta area to see some waterfalls. I'm sure you've already done a lot of trip planning, but here are some suggestions if you are looking for ideas in the area. Almost all of these are on the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. - Subway Tube...

Question for my more advanced off roaders

It comes down to personal preference. If you are just driving on fireroads then a manual can make it arguably more fun, and in the rocks a manual transmission (assuming stock transfer case gearing) is definitely more challenging than an automatic. That said, with a low enough crawl ratio a...

    Resolved Page load times

I'm glad to hear the site is moving to AWS. As part of that work are you able to look into why each page requires such a massive number of queries to render? The database server must be slammed. I'm assuming you are moving the database to RDS (Aurora?) which can take a ton of load, which should help

What About "Idiots" on Our Trails?

I think that the best possible response from the community is to strongly condemn that kind of action. Hopefully both the guilty party and the community at large get the message that resource damage is unacceptable. The best time to educate people is when they are just getting into the hobby...

    Overlandbound's new partner...

I have to admit that I'm now really confused about why you are a member of a forum focused on overlanding, and yet you are seemingly advocating for a loss of motorized trail access? Am I missing something?

    Overlandbound's new partner...

These are exactly the types of trails that are at risk of closure in many areas. In California we have lost hundreds of miles of dirt routes over the last several decades, and I applaud any group that helps to keep the existing trails open and accessible. Instead of focusing on BRC's actions...

    96 Jeep ZJ

@Smileyshaun, nice ZJ! Even though it leaked and was not reliable, I miss my ZJ as well. With a ~3" lift and lots of fender trimming it could stuff 33x12.5R15s and was very capable on the trail.

    96 Jeep ZJ

Nice ZJ. I still sometimes miss my 96, it wasn't the most reliable truck I've ever owned but it was very capable on the trail. What type of lift are you thinking of for yours? http://wwww.blankwhitepage.com/automotive/1996-jeep-grand-cherokee

Do you keep your jerry cans on your rig all of the time or just when wheeling?

I only carry mine on the rare trip where I think I'll need them. Filling the truck from a jerry can is a pain, and I'd rather just top off at the last available gas station.

    Corral Hollow trail conditions

This map https://www.fs.fed.us/r5/webmaps/SierraSnowDepth/ indicates no snow near Corral Hollow, but I would take that with a grain of salt. Bear Valley Ski Area is just a few miles away and unfortunately they just recovered a body from the snow there a few days ago, so there are still drifts in...

    Resolved Page load times

OverlandBound.com consistently has by far the slowest page load speeds of any forum I visit. According to the stats in the footer the average thread listing takes ~5s to render and requires 8-10k database queries. This is an absolutely crazy number of queries to render a single page. I'm...
