Overland on a budget? Is it possible?

As long as you have a vehicle then "overlanding" is essentially free, just head out and explore! No need for any fancy gear, just use common sense.

    Gas to diesel disco2

The 6.9 seems like it would be pretty huge for a Disco. Have you considered the new Cummins R2.8? https://cumminsengines.com/repower.aspx

Any families in the Oakland, CA area with little kids?

Most of our trips are in the Sierras anywhere from Yosemite up to North of Tahoe. We have also taken longer trips around the western US... Oregon, Utah, Colorado, etc. Earlier this year we went on a "waterfalls" trip up near Mt Shasta.

Any families in the Oakland, CA area with little kids?

Hi Rujack, I live in Orinda, just through the tunnel from you and have an almost 3 year old. My wife and I lived in Oakland in the Hiller Highlands area for several years and still visit Oakland often for food and beer.

    Resolved Slow Servers?

@Michael So, what did you guys change? :) The site is now much, much faster with the average queries per page going from thousands down to about 100.

    Resolved Slow Servers?

Here's a network analysis showing that the html for the page takes 5+ seconds to render and transfer.

    Resolved Slow Servers?

@Steve , You mentioned that you see a pause before the page even starts rendering, which is the same issue I am seeing. Looking at the network requests for a random forum page it is taking 4-5s just to render the html. This supports my original post(s) that the large number of queries are a...

    Resolved Slow Servers?

Hi Steve, if the "DB Queries" stat in the footer is correct than it requires a surprisingly high number of queries to render a single page. I build enterprise web applications for a living and it would be a major red flag if we ever had a page that required thousands of queries.

    bears

Hi Glenn, There are quite a few different options. In general bears are not a major issue when remote camping in California as long as you take some simple precautions. In fact, bears tend to be more of a problem near established campgrounds because they learn that human food is easy to get...

    Official Region West Facebook Group

Hi Michael, Just to be clear, I was not suggesting that you make the OB Facebook groups public. I was questioning if payment into OB is the best way to determine if a forum user can join a OB Facebook group, and I suggested some possible alternatives. - Matt

    Official Region West Facebook Group

@FrankRoams , It sounds like you and I have the exact same viewpoint on trail runs and meetups, anybody is welcome as long as they are respectful to the rest of the group and the trail. The reason I started this paid vs non-paid discussion was because payment is the gateway to being able to...

Looking for ideas for a july camping trip

Hi Dave, I'm pretty sure highway 1 is still closed south of Big Sur, but you could always go up 101 and head west on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road to get over to the coast. This would drop you right near Prewitt Ridge which is a popular camping spot. How far are you looking to drive? There are...

    Knife Sharpening

To set the angle I use a cheap sliding knife sharpener such as this one . These take some fiddling, but with proper setup they are accurate and easy to use. As a bonus these can also be used to put a very sharp edge on an axe or a hatchet. Once the angle is established I use a Spyderco...

@Michael , @FrankRoams , Thank you for your thoughtful replies. I understand that OB is a business and must generate revenue to stay running, and hopefully some of that revenue is used to improve page load speeds in the near future . Seriously though, my concern isn't with the site...

    Official Region West Facebook Group

Hi Frank, Thank you for the clarification. Unfortunately that enforces the perception that if you haven't "paid your dues" then you are considered a lower quality member. Is requiring payment really the best method for vetting that individuals are "a good fit" for the Facebook group? I would...

@FrankRoams , Just to clarify, the FB group is only open to "badged" OB members, not just members of the forum. Is that correct?
