Will I hate not having a winch for Overland?

There are hidden costs to adding a winch. In addition to the winch and bumper you'll also need accessories such as a tree saver, shackles, snatch block, line damper, gloves, etc. These all cost money and add weight to your rig. You also might want to consider upgrading to a synthetic line. One...

Blue Lakes and Indian Valley, CA

The opening date is based on a conditional seasonal closure determined by snow levels. See the following for details, in particular the signed decision from the Forest Service. This decision is an outcome of the "42 trails" lawsuit which closed Deer Valley and many other trails...

Blue Lakes and Indian Valley, CA

Last August some friends and I explored the Blue Lakes and Indian Valley area and I finally got around to uploading the photos. This was a quick weekend trip, we left the Bay Area Saturday morning and got home Sunday night. We drove east up highway 88 and then turned south onto Forestdale Road...

    PANTS

I second the Prana pants and shorts, in particular the Prana Zion. I own multiple pairs of these, they hold up well and are very comfortable.

What's your MPG (fuel economy) on the road.

Our 4Runner gets 17-20 mpg @ 65 mph on the freeway. Before the lift, bumper, and tires it was possible to get 21-22 mpg.

Is the term "overland" being misused/abused?

Did I miss something? I don't remember anybody advocating irresponsible trail usage in this thread.

HiLift jack: is it really needed?

This is a great discussion, lots of good reasons for and against carrying a high lift. One thing I forgot to mention earlier is that if you are going to carry a high lift make sure you have places where you can use it. I know this is somewhat obvious, but I see a lot of overland style rigs with...

Jack my stuff up. Need jack help/ suggestions.

I have the 4Runner version of that jack and what looks like the same jack adapter, they work great. I don't carry a high lift anymore. - Matt

Anyone know of something like this? Thinking of starting a DIY.

I made some window inserts out of plywood about 8 years ago. They fit into the window seal and are curved to seal against the glass, the backs are covered with window screen. I keep meaning to make new ones out of plastic, but through rain and snow these have held up and are still working fine.

HiLift jack: is it really needed?

It's a tough call. I carried a high lift jack in my Jeep on dozens of trips, and never used it. Part of the reason was that it was difficult to get to, and the few times we did need a high lift we used someone else's that was more accessible. When I bought the 4Runner in 2009 I decided to...

    Med kit

"Needle thoracotomy is in your future". I have a friend who is a highly trained EMT/Paramedic and even with his level of training they are not allowed to use this procedure in the field. As with many things, the decompression needle included in this kit can cause more harm than good in the hands...

Is the term "overland" being misused/abused?

The terms "overland" and "expedition" have definitely become very popular over the last several years. Instead of off-roading or car camping people are now overlanding, which sounds much more exciting and apparently requires cooler gear. Ultimately they are just words and people can use them...

    Forum for Land Use Issues

The original intent of this thread was to suggest that Overland Bound add a forum to discuss land use issues. Based on the above posts it seems there is some interest in this topic. That said, this thread is in the "Community Ideas and Requests" forum, which is not really a good place for...

    Signal Peak Information (Nor Cal)

The "solo" part makes it tricky since it depends on your level of experience and the capability of your rig (or how good your self-recovery gear is). Here are some ideas. - The eastern side of Signal Peak like we've been discussing. There are a lot of easy dirt trails in that area that...

My Case for the 5.9L Grand Cherokee (ZJ)

As far as I know the 95 and 98 ZJ use the same steering components. Have you already swapped the axles over?

My Case for the 5.9L Grand Cherokee (ZJ)

I had a 96 ZJ with the 5.2l, it was comfortable on the road and great offroad. Ultimately I sold it because of ongoing reliability issues as it got older. From a packaging standpoint the only downside is that the spare tire is in the trunk and takes up a lot of space, moving it to the rear...
