    Corral Hollow Day Trip 11/12/17 - 11/12/2017

Here is the view of the above campsite as of last Saturday (11/4). It looks like the area might have received some more snow since then. More pictures at: https://www.overlandbound.com/forums/threads/corral-hollow-and-mattley-ridge-now-with-more-snow-ca.10834/ Have a great trip, be safe!

Corral Hollow and Mattley Ridge, now with more snow! - CA

There was still some daylight left so we decided to head north on the Mattley Ridge trail. When heading from south to north most of the trial is uphill and some sections were loose and rocky. A dense fog started to roll in and the light started to fade since it was late afternoon. Bright...

Corral Hollow and Mattley Ridge, now with more snow! - CA

This weekend some friends and I were planning to run the Deer Valley trail, but then a winter storm warning was issued and we decided to change our plans. Instead we headed up to the Bear Valley area and ran Corral Hollow and Mattley Ridge. There are other write ups for Corral Hollow on this...

    Vehicle Inventory

It is, and the replacement is already on the way though I might replace it with something larger.

    Vehicle Inventory

Good suggestions, thanks. I have a small hacksaw in my bag which has proven useful on a few occasions. While in Moab a friend pinched his exhaust tip almost completely shut and his engine was stumbling, we used a hacksaw to cut off the damaged section so we could get off the trail.

    Vehicle Inventory

That's a good question, and I'm sorry to say I didn't weigh everything. I would guess that it is under 100lbs total. The tool bag is the heaviest item followed by the recovery bag.

    Vehicle Inventory

Thanks, I'm glad you found the post helpful. There are existing threads on individual items like first aid kits and tool sets, but I thought it would be good to discuss the "total inventory" for back-country travel. I don't want to imply that my setup is perfect, just a starting point for a...

    Vehicle Inventory

Specific items I own a high lift jack but never carry it (there's a good thread on this site discussing the pros and cons). Instead I carry the factory bottle jack with a saddle adapter and a base plate. The base plate is 3/4" plywood, which can support a surprisingly large amount of weight...

    Vehicle Inventory

This weekend I did an inventory of my truck and decided to take some pictures for my own reference and to share on this site. These are items that are always carried in the truck, with a general goal of trying to keep the weight reasonable while providing a high level of usefulness for vehicle...

R.I.P. Beloved vehicles that are now gone (wrecked, traded in,sold,or lost in divorce)

1996 Grand Cherokee ZJ. With the solid front and rear axles, 33" tires, and V8 it was great on the trail. The poor reliability and gas mileage caused me to sell it to buy my 4Runner. 1996 Land Rover Discovery 300tdi. I have always wanted a diesel truck and finally found one, but it needed a...

What to do if you punch a hole in your fuel tank miles from nowhere

Supposedly you can use a bar of ivory soap to temporarily seal a hole in your gas tank. http://www.ttora.com/forum/59-newbie-tech/75551-ivory-soap-gas-tank.html

Coral Hollow easy for all... Not quite

Glad to hear you made it out safely. Corral Hollow gets more difficult as you go west to east, and the most difficult part is the last mile or so on the eastern end. Definitely not a trail I would take our MDX on (plus my wife would kill me). - Matt

    Ground Clearance

Personally I would not focus on ground clearance since there are so many variables involved. - Type of terrain you are driving in. If you are in the dunes or on flat dirt roads then you don't need as much ground clearance as you do if you are rock crawling. - Wheelbase. The relevant number is...

Slick Rock and Coral Hollow trip 9/15 - 9/17

Are you guys planing to camp at the Lake Alpine (north) end of the trail or the Utica Reservoir (south) end of the trail? I ask because there are campsites about 1/4 mile in from each end and both are near creeks. To get the one on the south end you start the trail and go about 1/4 mile until...

What's your MPG (fuel economy) on the road.

Last weekend a friend and I drove to Oregon for the eclipse. I was somewhat surprised to see 20-22mpg on multiple tanks of gas, this was based on a calibrated ScanGauage and confirmed by hand calculations. These tanks were all highway and we were averaging 65-70mph. - Matt

Blue Lakes and Indian Valley, CA

I don't have any nav files, but there is a link to a map in my original post. Have fun! Thank you for the recommendation, I added Hawkins Peak to my list of places to check out. A friend recently went to Crater Lake and it is also on my list. - Matt
