Legal Weapons and Overlanding

I enjoyed reading the wide array of views in this thread so far. That being said, if i am more than 2 hours out of town, I have my pistol and usually my 12 gauge. When traveling with said items they are secure in locked cases as not to be run into any problems with the law. Also I try to not bring anything that gets scrutinized in the media to save myself a headache. If going to the range or a lawful shooting area I bring a wider selection.

My $.02

I used to carry a 9mm with a 15 round clip when I went backpacking. I wasn't worried about other hikers, I was more concerned about the Bears and Mountain Lions. After a couple of years hiking with the gun, I decided just to leave it at home. Never ran into any Mountain Lions and I only seen a few beers and wild pigs running the other direction. Would I bring one on a Overland Trip? Most likely no.
Don't shoot the beers! For the love of God please don't shoot the beers! [emoji23]

For a pistol caliber light weight rifle, I would go for an M1 Carbine.*

* - not valid in CA. Apparently it's an "assault rifle" there.

I got my first M1 Carbine this last year and oh man I was missing out. What a cool little "rifle" that shoots well and is easy to pack away.

Ordered a Sig MPX the other day after our rep brought in one and I shot it. Damn cool little gun. I've already got plans to SBR it and it'll probably end up as a gun for my adventures. Very neat little package and a hoot to shoot.

I think if I was going to get a "pistol" in a pistol caliber, I would go for a CZ Scorpion. Sig makes a great gun, I love their pistols and AR platform rifles.

Yeah the scorpion is cool but I've wanted a MPX since the first time I saw it. Shooting one, a full auto none the less, made me want one even more.

Just added a Trijicon MRO on an American Defense 1/3 co wit mount. I think it is complete.

I always take my 12 ga and have a mixture of 00 buck and slugs. Plenty of black bears where I camp.
I have my young girls learning to shoot pistols.... starting them off with BB guns until they gain some upper body strength. My oldest turned 12 this year so I might get a basic 22 rifle to start as well.
