I have a lot more than 5 things I like about my truck, but here are 5.
It’s a 1980 Toyota short bed 4x4 pickup, model #RN37
1. Classic styling, I love the look of the thing, and I regularly get compliments on it.
2. Manual transmission, driving a manual is so much more fun than an automatic.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone for the run tomorrow, it’s going to be fun. The trail is muddy and rough, with a couple of rocky sections. The water crossing is about a foot and a half deep, and there is a big puddle near the yellow post sites that’s about a foot deep. Shouldn’t be a...
Both my axe and shovel are from yard sales. Really cheap, ant they are both quality American made tools. I prefer wood handles on my tools, and with a little maintenance they hold up great. Just rub a little boiled linseed oil into the wood every so often, and they’ll last for years.
I haven’t been able to check out the trail, since I’m in the middle of rebuilding my front axle, but that should be done today, and I can pre run the trail tomorrow. They don’t close Bee Canyon unless the road washes out, so it shouldn’t be a problem, but it will be good and muddy, and possibly...
I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it, but it sounds like fun. I consider my truck vintage, it’s a 1980 Toyota, it will be 40 years old in 2020. I’ll definitely keep following this thread, and the website when it is up.
Nice rig! My buddy has an fj62, and loves it. Wild rose may be full, but there are flat spots in Panamint Valley that you can camp on. There are plenty of dirt roads, just find a spot off one and set up camp. Panamint Valley is mostly BLM land, so dispersed camping is fine. Have fun and enjoy...
I once drove into Bodie before the road was officially open, but I came in the long way from the Nevada side, and left the usual way on the California side. The ranger wasn’t too happy to see me, but the people I gave a ride too were very happy not to have to hike back out. I guess I’m lucky...
I’m into my entire rig for less than the markup on that truck. I don’t plan on ever buying a brand new vehicle, I’ll let someone else take the big hit on depreciation.
I’ve never done the water crossing, since I’ve heard it averages about 32-36 inches deep, and I really don’t want water in my truck (31 inch tires!). There really isn’t a good detour for that, you have to go to the freeway, and it is something like 20
Miles. The dry lake should be no problem, it...
Death Valley is not exactly between Las Vegas and Tonopah, but is close enough that you should see it while you are in the area. It is definitely worth visiting, and in April shouldn’t be too hot. In Tonopah, the mining park, and the Central Nevada Museum are worth a visit as well. I’ve stayed...
