Gear for starting out? (Check my list!)

If you dont want to spend money on a roof basket, you shouldnt spend time putting Jerry Cans on your roof with just bungee and a net. That's a tragedy waiting to happen, as it comes loose from the bungee at highway speeds and crashes through someone else's windshield, breaking thier nose if they...

Learning to wrench for field repairs and DIY installs

??? Are you saying there are places in the world where replacing the brakes is outside the vehicle owner's jurrisdiction?

Gear for starting out? (Check my list!)

Personally, I'd be wary of putting a 30 to 40 pound jerry can on your basket-less roof with just a net and bungee. If you have a tow hitch you can get a reasonably priced hitch rack

    Trouble with light switches

You're a better man than me. If the switches that came with the light bar worked fine, I'd have simply stuck with them.

The Quest for the Best Knife.

Way to resurrect! I have a Byrd (Spyderco's budged brand) CaraCara 2 Rescue in the center consoles of my 14 GMC Sierra and my 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Fir about 35 years, I have carried a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife in my pocket. There is either a Spyderco Native 5, or a Spyderco Atlantic Salt...

What to put on my vehicle?

Danny, I dont know what your range is at this point, but I will say, there is no off-roading allowed in Yellowstone or the Badlands. There are, however, paved and dirt roads throughout both that lead you through some very stunning terrain, and some campgrounds with nice views. None of that...

Uh, did you say you were moving to the Massachusetts area? I'm pretty handy around my truck but theres a boatload more I'd like to know. See you when you get here

    Very bad day

Glad you got it back home at least. ? I dont imagine it will clear if the issue is not resolved or if your scanner has a fault? But as to what it means, now that you are back home, when you get a moment of free time, take a look at the thread with some fresh eyes. We found the official and...

    Very bad day

The thought was there may have been a fuel pump issue but if that wasn't recognized, and it was jump started thinking it was the battery, that may have sent the code.

    Dont jump it

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

I fully agree with your renaming scheme. Keeps things in line with history while providing an outlet of names for the new

My coworker's fiancee works at Boston Dynamics. The place making the robot dog, robot horse, and Atlas, that robot droid that plays on the jungle gym and is going to make us extinct someday. Previously owned by Google. Now not, so they say. The guy was "just" a mechanic. I say "just", on...

I agree, also, with the idea that the professionally trained and experienced mechanic is a must-have for certain things. No way am I opening up a transmission. Absolutely good to have them check out the truck now and then, as BillyBob is right, they will spot a small issue waiting to become a...

Nope. "Quickly" means "go to an automotive trade school" at about $10,000 while also investing in every tool known to man. Not quickly means buying the Chilton's manual, or FSM (Factory Service Manual) for your vehicle, and some diagnostic tools like a Volt/Ohm meter (MultiMeter they call it...

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Right! Mazda and Ford continued that relationship for along time. Mazda had a version of the Ford Ranger, even. They probably do this time around as well

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Durability and versatility. Especially these days with extended and crew cabs. By area, very little of the US is made up of city. So...Family hauler. Work crew hauler. And equipment or payload far exceeding cars. Load it with camping gear or bikes. Load it with hay and still pull a horse...

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Looks suspiciously like a Colorado with a reworked nose (and different engine). Cover the frant fascia with your finger and see. That's fine with me. Isuzu made the very first small Chuvy trucks - the Luv.

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Personally I do enjoy full sized trucks and that's all I've ever owned aside from car sedans and coupes. Never owned a small or midsize truck... ...but I have wanted to. 30 years ago, I had a friend with a Chevy S-10 pickup. Standard shift. It did everything we needed as younger guys striking...

Check fuel pressure. Theres a VERY good chance it's the fuel pump, especially if anyone tried to jump start it. JW is not wrong. This seems to indicate a bad TIPM or a short. If it wasnt starting, and you tried to jump it, it could throw this code because of the attempted jump, all the while...

    Damaged my tie rod

Just to chime in: ALWAYS use a torque wrench. If you are in the field and dont have one, that's one thing. But if thats the case, make your way to a shop and check it at every stop. If you are in your driveway or a garage, there is really no reason not to have a torque wrench. I have an old...
