Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
You can get a four pack of the frs/gmrs radios off Amazon for about $30 and have them to pass out to people you're with and not be so heart broken when they get stolen or destroyed. Two of mine got broken at Uwharrie last year.
There is a lot of info that comes along with your Ham license that will improve your ability to communicate, plus a network of Hams across the globe. The range is better than CB and it's also much clearer and better regulated so its reliable and you don't have to worry about guys covering 2-3...
Oh don't get me wrong, I use the app most of the time. You can also enter locations manually to preload your radio if you know the area you'll be in. I sat on the beach last year and tried out repeaters with my HT. I'm probably going to do the same thing this year! I Just like to have the book...
I use repeater book's app, but a hardcopy for those times you have no service is a good idea and for $10-15 from ARRL (also supports our continued access to the frequencies) is a good one to have. I have the ArtSci one as well.
What the area guys are talking about in Virginia (along with @chris_jones is having our 3-4 little groups for monthly get togethers and little overnight kinds of things but organizing state and region wide gatherings to get everyone acquainted for larger/ longer trips.
What you are saying is...
OK everyone, time is up!!! According to the poll, we are going to grab lunch to get acquainted, do some exploring around Buena Vista, and then if you'd like to, camp somewhere in the area afterward on May 20th! I hope everyone can come out for this!!!
Lunch will be around 11am at JJ's Meat...
I have a Kenwood TM-G707 dual band and an Icom 2100H right now, but both are dated radios. They both work excelent but I'm wanting some of the features of the 710G like APRS and cross-band. I have a Yaesu FT-897D and just sold a FT-757GXii. I'm looking at a FT-857D for use in the Xterra as well...
Going back home to visit my Dad and attend a baby shower for some friends of ours. Nothing too exciting but a guy is supposed to come check out my K5 tomorrow. Hopefully he'll offer me a reasonable amount and I'll be rid of it!
OK everyone! Coming down to "Zero" hour on voting! Everyone get your say in today and I'll be updating tomorrow with the finalized date and a rough idea of what's happening.
Again, if anyone is familiar with the Buena Vista area and would like to take point for the "trail riding" please speak...
Tractor Supply, at least here on the eastern coast, stopped carrying Hi-Lift brand and is carrying the Reese knock-off. Doesn't have removable handle and isn't really much cheaper IIRC.
Sportsman's Warehouse is the only place I can remember close to me that sells the actual Hi-Lift brand in the...
Welcome! We've got three meet-ups being worked out for Virginia! Head on over to the Overland Bound Meet-ups section and check them out!
Also, you'll probably want to update your map pin location, you appear to be located on "null island". :tonguewink:
I used to go exploring in my Cavalier. It had several big dents in the floors to prove that too! Overlanding doesn't only mean off-roading. As far as I'm concerned, throwing a backpack full of clothes into a Miata and running RTE 66 would still count. It's about the adventure more than anything...
My experience with this is off-roading as we've not done much travel with the kids yet. On the trail, we've usually stashed a couple sandwiches in the cooler after breakfast and then hot-n-spicy cheezits are a staple as well. Maybe a granola bar for a mid evening snack if we wind up being out...
I have a 10 man tent if the wife and kids are going and I just got a 4 man tent for the times it's just one kid and/or the dog and I. We're talking about building a travel trailer but I don't think that will include a tent built into it. It's just to make up space when we travel in a mid sized...
