What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Dropped it off at the local Nissan dealer to have them replace the secondary timing tensioner shoes and chains, water pump and the failed radiator that cost the previous owner a transmission. Should be ready tomorrow evening!

    TYT TH-9800

Now that I've had the radio for a bit, I still really like it. I ordered the good usb programming cable for it and used Chirp to dump a lot of my commonly used frequencies into it. The dual watch is really nice, we use a local repeater for area wide coms and then have a specific 2m frequency we...

Wiring CB radio to cigarette lighter adapter? (help)

These are power poles: https://powerwerx.com/anderson-powerpole-connectors-30amp-unassembled As I explained in my original post, since your antenna is grounded to the body, if the area the antenna was in was suddenly presenting a high resistance path to ground then current in that area would...

Wiring CB radio to cigarette lighter adapter? (help)

That will work, but you would be well served to look into Power Poles and using them for the connections. In the future they could prove to be very useful for other means of communication. It's also a good practice to use a fuse in both power leads. If you have a circuit loose a ground path...

What do you use? Ham radio or CB radio?

Doesn't triple the distance. SSB is more efficient, using all the power to send the data rather than wasting 4w on the carrier. Not commonly used or found in CBs so its rare you'd happen into a group that has it. Most amateur HF voice is on SSB with a small subset using pure carrier AM for the...

What do you use? Ham radio or CB radio?

FRS/GMRS use FM modulation which is much clearer than CB's AM modulation. Range, if the CB has a decent antenna, is about a draw. Its why both are licensee-by-rule and why those frequencies were chosen. CB will occasionally talk on "skip" when the ionosphere is right, and that will get you...

New Radio by Ruggedradios. Cb and ham all in one

The TYT TH-9800 does Ham 10m and 6m but will tune to the 11m band but only operates FM and with a minimum power level of 5W which is over the 4W limit for CB service. It would take more than a firmware update to get AM out of a FM only transmitter.

New Radio by Ruggedradios. Cb and ham all in one

Yeah. All these cheap little Chinese units flooding the market are a double edged sword. On the one hand, they are affordable for most anyone getting into the Amateur hobby and it was one of the UV-5R Baofengs that rekindled my interest. Without it, I probably would still be a Tech who's only...

New Radio by Ruggedradios. Cb and ham all in one

I can't find a copy of their manual anywhere and it doesn't expressly say it will TX in AM mode. But if you and all your "Good Buddies" were running their ripoff radios, most people wouldn't know the difference. But yes, it's still illegal and puts all those putzes on bands that I've put a lot...

New Radio by Ruggedradios. Cb and ham all in one

Its a blue TYT TH-9800 and doesn't actually do CB, as it only TX on FM where US CB is AM. It will RX AM very nicely though, I listen to truckers with it regularly. It's also not legal to use on CB frequencies because even on low is over the legal power limit for CB and is not a FCC type...

What pans do you guys use??

I have a cast iron 6" pan and a MSR 750mL pot. I'm probably going to start carrying a larger pan in the future, the 6" isn't quite big enough to feed all five of us at once or fix a decent pancake in. Ever evolving!

What's you 3 favorite, can't live without, bits of gear?

EDC: Single AA flashlight, Gerber 500 multi-tool, and a pocket knife of some sort. I feel naked without them. Rig: Flashlight, Jumper cables, basic hand tools Camp: Eh...

    What's your Multi-Tool?

I use a Gerber MP600 black with the replaceable carbide jaw inserts. I don't like the knife on it much, but the file does pretty good and the other bits are handy. I've carried it for 3-4 years now I guess and it just keeps going. I have been pinched by it but I can put the pliers into service...

    Firestik II SWR readings

The antenna I had was a Wilson 5' Silverlode (?). It seemed to do ok, but the element broke loose of the base in no time flat and even after repairing it, it never did work quite right. I've helped tune several Firestik antennas but will never own one myself. The 102" is too tough and works too...

    Firestik II SWR readings

I used a fiberglass antenna one time. It was replaced in short order by a 102" stainless whip and that is all I will run. On my Cherokee, it was mounted about midways up the rear hatch with a 6" extension bar rather than a spring and always performed amazingly. On my K5, it's on a ball mount on...

    Utility lights, vehicle/base camp

We have a couple old Coleman lanterns we've been using. It's not an amazing amount of light but supper is usually fixed and served by dark and you don't need an amazing amount of light to make s'mores or enjoy a few cold adult beverages. Night's for sleepin y'all!!!! I do have a big 12v...
