Where do you get your maps?

So, I am a map nerd. I’ve always loved them. As outdoor enthusiasts and overlanders maps are vital to our exploration. There are many places to find maps and I have researched a number of free map sources, many that are capable of being used with GIS programs such as QGIS, ArcGIS, or simple printable maps.

Below is my running list:

National Geographic Maps:
http://www.natgeomaps.com/trail-maps/pdf-quads

US Geological Survey Maps:
https://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/
https://viewer.nationalmap.gov/basic/

Bureau of Land Management Maps:
https://navigator.blm.gov/home
https://www.blm.gov/maps/georeferenced-PDFs

National Park Service Maps:

https://www.nps.gov/hfc/cfm/carto-atoz-geopdf.cfm?letter=c

Open Street Map for Garmin:
http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

Do you guys know of any other free map libraries or sources? Lets spread the wealth.

Usually, each State has a "data market" site dedicated to storing the States publicly available data. I know in my home state of Kansas, I can find shapefiles for road centerlines , cities, counties, rivers & streams. We even have state wide LIDAR data. I will see if I can compile a list.

@caswanson,

Thanks for the info. That's awesome that Kansas make LIDAR publicly avalible! That is some cool imagery to play with.

Thanks again,

It's already been done: Here's a compiled list for each state with several data sources per state.

So I'm a bit perplexed why they would leave out Nevada.... so I scrolled thru the list to find it and don't recognize the University of Nervada, Rino....Bahahahahahaha :sob: I guess my brother's University is not as sharp as it used to be. :sunglasses: And when you click on the links there is no data available... Hmmmmmmm.

@HappyOurOverlanding,

The NV links seem to be outdated, but other ones our working. Purdue may just hold a grudge aginst NV....

The USGS and BLM links I included in the initial post should have some data for the Silver State.

In Australia most use Hema Map which is a pay service. But there are others like Memory-Map (http://memory-map.com.au/mapping-software.html) that have pretty good free gps apps that allow us to track our routes using the state topo maps that are free.

Are there any map data sources for Mexico, Central and South America? I saw Expedition Overland was using HEMA maps with their travels down south. I would love to obtain those or something equivalent. Ideas?
