I use an old, 25 year, Coleman 2 burner but man I'm really liking the Blackstone 17". My only question with it is, can you put a coffe percolator on it or do you need another source of fire to boil with?
Not as fun as the Watching the Paint Dry video, but here you go.
You can fast forward to the end where he says it started to percolate at 35 minutes.

Timely,

Our family is overlanding Tasmania for 4 weeks in January so I have been looking for something flatpack (instead of a cut down 44) and found a few examples for sale on evilbay. These were what I was after but decided I would knock up one myself and save some coin.

Found some plans online (google is your friend here) and fabbed up one smaller and a little stouter. I work for metal fab company so raided the offcut bin. I used 1.9mm Zinc Aneal instead of 3mm plate to keep weight down.

Original plans are detailed at 600x250x300, ours ended up 400x300x310 as I had a spare BBQ plate to suit (so that became my dimensions).

I'm sure it will warp a little (dont pour water on it) but given it took an hour and material was free im pretty happy with the result. Best part is as one of the longer panels is 5mm deeper than the other it creates an overlap, keeping the coals off the ground... A requirement for most AUS campsites.

This will be used as a campfire and additionally with the BBQ plate as our secondary cooking method.

Apologies for the insta HDR, if there is interest I'd gladly upload the plans.

Nice work! I have some plate steel with the same idea in mind but so many home projects have kept me from cutting some steel and trying to make my own like you did. Cheers,

Well, I talked myself out of the Jumbo Joe.
Really, for packing as light as possible in my FJ, it wouldn't have fit.
If worse comes to worse, I'll take a bag of charcoal with me and put that in the firepit.
I'll stick to my propane and/or wood while out on the trail.
TXpedition, I ran into the same problem with my “Smoky Joe” taking up to much room in the FJ so I built this; it’s an old grill grate and I fab’ed some legs out of round stock that I can fold up flat. The grate is 14 1/2” sq. I can also slide an old 9” x 13” cake pan under it to hold charcoal if necessary. After a few days of reading reviews we opted to buy a Weber Q1200. I think it will be the perfect size for our grilling needs. Fairly easy to clean, compact, and great reviews. After a pretty basic assembly, we fired it up and it got to a toasty 450d in several minutes. We bought the cover and 10 extra drip pans. Impressive little compact grill with room to roast at least a 5# chicken.

Anyone running a Q1200? thoughts, pointers, tips?

I use a propane grill, a charcoal grill, real fire....all depends on where I am and how much time I have. I will say I do prefer the real fire grilling and cooking best...just better taste all around.
