I have both this, and the "Big Red Campfire." Love 'em both. The way they pack up is perfect for throwing in the rig. FWIW, they both have the same size fire ring, IIRC, so actual flame/heat/propane consumption is the same.

I figured I'd get a weight on the rig as it sits, before the SAS, bigger wheels/tires, rear tire mount deal, etc:
It's a little washed out, but the weights are:
Front 4880 lbs
Rear 4800 lbs
Total 9680 lbs
Not too bad, close to what I expected. I figured it'd be over 10k lbs. The truck's...
You have a great rig, that doesn't need anything for 99% of "Overlanding". My thoughts would be:
Sat-based communication device, I use a Garmin inReach but there are many out there. IMHO it's a "must have" to be sure you can keep people informed of your status and location, and if it comes...
As for the projects in-motion, I picked up this:
It's a '08 SRT 6.1L Hemi. As you can see, we already opened it up, and I'm very happy with how clean it is. I'm tempted to do a dingle-ball hone, some rings/bearings and a reseal and run 'it... but if you've followed this thread you know...
Not a ton to update right this second, but some things are in-motion now.
First, I did a pretty "basic" stereo upgrade on the WJ. It already had an aftermarket Single DIN head unit, and the dash speakers were replaced (with some $30 Crutchfield things in the stock size) but the amp and the...
Just a thought, but what about towing a little adventure trailer? I know you don't want to tow your actual travel trailer, but a small off-road teardrop that you and the wife can sleep in, then put a RTT for the kids on TOP of might be perfect. Or sleep 2 ppl in the truck bed, 2 in the...
Thanks, I'll keep this thread posted on what I do with the chainsaw.
Thanks!
Wow, can't believe I didn't think of that...
Thanks! ARB in the front is 110% sure thing, rear I'm still toying with a Detroit... but prob ARB there too (no real price difference for the AAM 11.5" and I already...
Thanks for the encouragement, I'll certainly keep this thread posted. FWIW, I went back and forth on doing the expensive mods like the solid axle swap to this truck or just buying a newer Ford or RAM that's already solid front axle. At the end of the day, this is still the more "affordable"...
Historically, I always camped from my pickup back before we called it Overlanding. I've also done a lot of trailer/RV camping, and still have an RV. In the search for simplicity, I got more into Jeeps the last few years, and managed to over-complicate those too. I went from throwing a tent...
First, awesome Sub!
Personally I think it's worth it to get a little more clearance, break-over etc. on such a big rig. Also, the lift allows for the bigger tire, which gives more sidewall which makes for both a better ride aired down but also better traction and floatation. Of course...
Shameless plug, but save yourself a fortune with mine: FOR SALE - West - 2018 SoCal Teardrops 459 Krawler - $23,999 - Las Vegas, NV - Willing to help with delivery up to ~500 miles
Outside of that, it's super hard to say what is "best." There are some a hair bigger than what I have that add...
I just did a somewhat similar trip a few weeks back:
We had to work around a few closed trails too:
This mess was working around a land slide that I think happened after a fire, or so we were told. The brown was the intended route, all the red was finding another way through.
All-in-all we...
