    Where to start with ham?

Plenty of used gear flying around out there no need to buy new unless you just want to. It'll save you a ton of money. A mobile will very much outperform a handheld in early every circumstance but being on foot obviously. You should have a handheld anyway even if you do go with a mobile for...

Wanting a nice Sunday drive through the Ozarks

The Ouchitas extend out around Broken Bow lake as well. Lots of dirt/trails and what not around there. Can be kind of a PITA to naviagte as the McCurtain county game preserve is there as well and there's about a million hunting clubs each with their own gates that may or maynot be locked. Can...

    GMRS Radio!

A commercial/business band UHF antenna should do the trick handily as GMRS is right in the middle of that band which is 450-470 mhz The amateur UHF band is 420-450 mhz. FWIW i run both HAM and GMRS and found a dual band HAM antenna to offer acceptable performance and a SWR in the GMRS range...

And i wasnt talking aboot tires ha. I was mainly referring to the OP who was asking about wheels.

    15” wheels

Unless you want a specific style the used market is overflowing with 15 inch steel and aluminum factory wheels for various Jeep models.

    Axles

There were no vacuum hubs. Even earlier models that had the Central Axle Disconnect used a fork and sliding collar on the passenger side axleshaft which was a two piece arrangement. The hubs were splined right to the axle shaft like a front wheel drive car.

    Axles

Your 01 didn't have any vacuum actuated anything in the front axle unless someone put a pre 91 axle under there, Wragnlers used the vacuum disco axles up till the end of the YJ. The hubs on the Dana 30 are constantly engaged there is nothing to engage or disengage the stub shaft is solid though...

    Axles

His year model won't have that nonsense. They stopped that on XJs in 91.

HAM radio unit: fan or cooling fins?

Excellent point. My PM400 will do 28 watts but i keep it on "low" 99 percent of the time which i have programed as 5 watts. I only bump up the power when i need it. That 5 watts gets nearly everything done.

What's your MPG (fuel economy) on the road.

I just pulled this from my maintenance app. The past 365 days of fuel use. 1995 Jeep XJ. That last refueling of 11mpg was all off pavement.

Buddy Heater suspected as cause of death

CO is slightly lighter than air not heavier. But it tends to diffuse evenly throughout a compartment. And yes the Buddy heaters will produce some CO. When I run it in my Jeep my CO monitor shows about a 10ppm reading after 15 minutes of use and it seems to level out there. That being said...

    Legal Weapons and Overlanding

I typically carry a G19 or 17 for EDC. On days I work I lock the G17 in a lock box (can't carry at work but they can't stop you from having it in your vehicle) and keep a Command Arms Accessories Micro Roni G17 chassis cable locked under the seat as well. Scooped it up on discount a while...

    Axles

For that tire size I wouldn't bother spending the time and money trying to get non Xj axles under there, save that money and put it towards fuel and getting out here. I can't remember what your axles are from your previous threads but the Dana 30 is actually quite a good axle and you really...

    Fuel smell and bad mileage

You may benefit from a computer reset. Disconnect the battery and touch the cables together for 30 seconds.

    Field deployable 2m antenna.

I keep a small dual band mobile in my solar generator box and hook it to a roll up jpole I toss into trees that are nearby.

HAM radio unit: fan or cooling fins?

There's plenty of radios with no cooling fan. As long as they are designed that way there may not be a need for it. My Motorola mobile just has a finned heat sink. But it's a beefy heat sink and the radio's maximum power output is 28 watts.

    Faux overlander

Doesn't bother me any since it doesn't directly affect me. It does however reinforce my introvert tendencies and my aversion to turning things I enjoy to do into group activities.
