I use a pop up style tent. Goes up super quick, makes a great out house, and once you get the hang of it, it packs up super quick as well. It's also about 60 bucks or so.
I'll second the Xterra suggestion. If you've got the cash for the second gens, it's a great option. There are known issues with the radiator trans coolers blowing seals, and mixing trans fluid with coolant, but any model after 2012 should be clear of this issue.
I have an 03 Xterra (first...
Personally, if you think you're going to be needing the locker, I'd say just buy the pro4x. I drive a stock 03 xterra. I have a front locker waiting to be installed, but haven't hit an obstacle that I've not been able to get over or around yet. Unless you're planning on doing the rubicon or...
I wheeled an 04 colorado for a couple of years. There was a group day trip I went on, where I got really lucky. I ended up getting a rock wedged up between the transfer case, and rear cross member. I bought skid plates after that.
They saved my bacon on another trip where we spent the vast...
I wasn't talking about a secondary lithium battery. I was referring to picking up something like a jackery power station.
An agm battery will definitely run a fridge for a couple of days, and having a jump pack is a great backup in case the battery gets drained too far. A portable power...
Definitely go with an AGM. Keep in mind that being in the engine compartment is going to cut the life of the battery down (probably expect to replace every 3 years or so). A quality jump box will keep you from being stranded. This is the exact route I'm planning on going for my battery setup...
Mike, we spoke about this trip a while ago. Like I said then, I don't know if we can do the whole thing with you, but I think we can at least shoot for about half of it. As of right now, count us in for about a week.
I know the feeling. Fortunately, my 03 isn't my daily, but I'm planning on doing a full drawer system in a few months. I'll eventually have a trailer, but will still take just the X if it's just me, and no wife a kid.
I too am thinking molle rear window panels (definitely at least one panel)...
For me, it's hands down the people. I found the community helpful, insightful, and just plain nice. I was pretty active on here for a little over a year before getting a membership.
I've made some great friends along the way as well, so that helps.
I don't have a 4runner, but I'm going through the same process right now. I hear REALLY good things about the Iceco VL series fridges. Good insulation, excellent compressor, and pretty good efficiency.
You should be able to grab a group 24 with between 70-85 Ah. Just make sure it's a sealed.
I love me a good D40 build. I don't care what anybody said. I think the nissans are one of the best looking trucks out there!
As somebody who ran a stock 04 colorado for a while, I can tell you that heading out in a stock truck is the best way to learn what you really need, and to challenge...
I've not been up there, and don't know where it is. Looks like a helluva view though! Things are up in the air right now due to all this smoke, but I'll definitely keep you posted.
It's honestly not that complicated. Yes, there's more features than a CB, but it's infinitely more useful. A Baofeng handheld is way more complicated than the midland GMRS radios, honestly.
