Learning to wrench for field repairs and DIY installs

I'll give an example of having tools to handle things that don't even have to do with the vehicle. We just got back from 3 days of camping and wheeling. We rely on a 7 gallon aqua-tainer that uses a 12v pump and faucet to dispense water. It stopped working Saturday morning due to one of the...

I'll check the fuse. I don't wanna sidetrack George's thread anymore than we already have. ;)

    SW Idaho Overlanding

Well, I just installed a new switch box, and rewired my aux switches (got rid of that cheapo plastic switch facia), and it worked in the driveway, but I had no dash lights when we got to the trail. Brake lights worked fine, as dead headlights, so I just rolled with it. I plan on pulling it out...

Now, the question is..... Drive the Fronty with heated seats (and a bit less clearance at the moment..... But heated seats), or figure out what's up with the dash lights on the X....

Buying an Old Used Rig... Wait- Isn't it Old and Used?

I'll play devils advocate here, and say, yes, it is possible to get an old vehicle that is reliable. I purchased a 2003 Xterra two years ago, for $5800 with 135k. In that two years, I've replaced a catalytic converter, and front wheel bearings. I had 20+ pages of maintenance records and...

    02 Xterra bumper recommendations

I don't have a steel bumper on mine (don't want to deal with upgrading the torsion bars). However, shrockworks, coastal offroad have them. Wam bumpers also makes one now, as well as ARB. Hardcore offroad also make one (I have their diy rear bumper kit, and it's been solid).

Top 5 overland accessories for a DIY trailer.

We actually considered a teardrop style trailer. In the end, my wife said she'd prefer a tent based setup (though I don't know why), so that sort of settled it. Also, one advantage of an expo style trailer over a teardrop is footprint. We can utilize a 4'x6' trailer with a tent on top. To...

Top 5 overland accessories for a DIY trailer.

I hate double post, but need to amend my previous statement by saying my needs are different than roads. I don't want to get to camp, and have to pull anything out of the trailer other than chairs. Unfold the RTT, deploy the awning, kitchen, and open the fridge. Everything is there, waiting, and...

Top 5 overland accessories for a DIY trailer.

I was going to reply earlier today, but decided to hold off. I'm currently starting to build my trailer as well. I'm looking at what I want to do with the trailer, and designing systems that accommodate those requirements. I have a family of 3 that love to camp. The longest we've gone so...

    Reaver's DIY adventure box!

Yeah, they're not crazy expensive right now here either, but I like the idea of using extruded aluminum.

    Reaver's DIY adventure box!

I just finished designing the skeleton for the box. Definitely going with extruded aluminum from T-Nutz.com. With everything pre-cut, and corner gusset brackets, the materials come out to $705 plus shipping. This is the way.

    Reaver's DIY adventure box!

OK, I know I've not posted anything in a while. I've still been trying to figure out what exactly I want to build the box frame out of. Cost of steel keeps going up. That, combined with the fact that I would have to buy a whole lot of additional equipment, learn to use it, then build the...

    NJ 2000 frontier build

Ahh! So it makes the wire larger, thereby maintaining better contact. Brilliant! Can't say I've run into that problem with either of my Midland gmrs radios, but what a great solution.

Really? I had no idea most international d22's weren't torsion bars. TIL. Yeah, there's definitely more choices for the Xterra than the Frontier. I mean, my rear tire carrier was a hardcore offroad steel bumper, that we modified and added a swing out to. But yeah, I get where you're coming from.

    NJ 2000 frontier build

I mean, there aren't a lot of options with the first gens. Suspension is basically PML, 3" lift, body lift, or SAS (same as the X). Bed is either Topper, softopper, or tonneau. Bedrack if you want (you could go with a universal rack). Generally, almost everything that fits a 1st Gen Xterra...

If you want inspriation, check out Navara builds. Especially out of Australia. Alot of the mods are adaptable as well. You can pick up all sorts of stuff if you're willing to wait a bit to have it shipped here.

Me too, but I have zero metal fab skills, nor the equipment to do it. Still, he's got a nice build (for a yota anyways).

What is the best way to water proof my roof mounted lighting harness?

I've been informed that silicone on bare metal will cause it to rust (water or not), and fairly quickly. I will second using a waterproof plug on the outside of the vehicle though.
