What did you make the bracket out of? I've been thinking about making something similar, but haven't gotten to it yet. Right now my boards are ratchet strapped to the side of my trailer.
I will always welcome a fellow Nissan driver out here in the gem state. If you ever make it out here, hit me up. I'll show ya around, and even take you to a few of my favorite spots.
I'm currently using my 540Wh rockpals to power my 40L fridge. Draws 40w on startup, and drops to about 33.
I added an online voltage stabilizer, as the 12v output of the rockpals is unregulated. This allows me to use the full capacity of the battery pack to power the fridge, which will last two...
I had aluminum skids on my previous truck, and have steel on my frontier. I honestly don't feel like the weight savings and cost for aluminum is worth it over the strength of steel. That being said, I built my own rear swing out with the help of a friend and a hardcore offroad diy kit. Way...
Sounds like a good start. Keep in mind you're going to have to upgrade the front and rear suspension to accommodate steel bumpers. And add-a-leafs only delay the inevitable. I'd recommend all new spring packs in the rear.
One thing I always tell people is to wheel the vehicle in stock form for a while before modifying it. You'd be surprised at how capable a stock xterra is.
My 03 is on bone stock suspension, and I'm able to keep up with lifted 4runners and jeeps all day long. I'm not doing the Rubicon in it...
I have a 2003 X (1.5 Gen vs 2nd Gen you have), but I also have a 2013 Frontier (mechanically the same as your X).
The biggest issues you'd have with the X, you've already addressed. You might snap a cv at some point, but that depends on how hard you push it, and it's less likely without a front...
I unfortunately think I'm done with trips for the year. I might do an overnighter here or there, but we've got tons of stuff we need to do around the house, and I want to get the trailer built for next year.
Mines still been working fantastic. Used it on several trips so far this year, and other than the cigarette plug occasionally getting loose (will be resolved with the trailer build), I've been very happy with it.
That's certainly something to consider. There are a few companies that have been around for quite some time. Turtleback, Patriot Campers, and opus aren't going anywhere. These are long established companies, but don't offer a teardrop in the style you're looking for.
I am, but it's pretty low on the list. I need tires, skid plates, fix my aux switches, paint my drawers, build my trailer, lif the frontier, new tires for the Fronty, and some other stuff first. Then maybe I'll consider a snorkel.
Yeah, he made it through just fine, as did a guy in a subaru outback. Flooding my engine is a big fear of mine. I have neither the skills or money to replace it right now, if that were to happen.
I laugh, but it's not really funny. I was behind a friend of mine, as he took his foam sided trailer through a river once. It started floating, as did his Cherokee Chief. I opted not to cross the river, and camped on the opposite side that night. They had to come back across to get out anyways...
I don't have much in the way of skills yet either. For Me, the best way to learn is to research, plan, and attempt.
I don't have to build a frame, as mine is very strong (it used to be a commercial tow behind road sign), so my box will be made from wood. The wood will be coated in epoxy resin...
I'm currently thinking through a similar situation. My wife recently got into driving offroad as well.
Up until very recently, we managed to pack everything we need for 5 days (our longest trip yet), including myself, my wife, our 4yo, and the dog, in my 03 xterra.
As you can imagine, it's a...
My fridge comes in the house when it's not in use.
As far as voltage regulation, I actually use one of these to stabilize my voltage:
Since I'm currently using an unregulated 540Wh lithium pack to run my fridge. This allows me to use the full capacity of the battery pack.
