    Lifepo4 batteries?

The biggest thing you need to think about is whether or not the battery your getting has a low temperature cutoff switch. The reason for this is because LiFePO4 cannot be charged below about 35F. Doing so will turn your battery into a paper weight. Check out DIY Solar on YouTube for battery...

    Question regarding a simple switch

This. If the light draws more amps than the switch is rated to handle, it will burn out. When this happens, if your lucky, the switch will burn up, and your light will stop working. If you're unlucky, the switch will overheat, short out, and catch on fire. You need to look at the Amp rating...

    12v Basics

You're correct in that the battery needs to be grounded. But, we're talking DC circuits here. The big ground wire coming out of the bus bar in my diagram is my primary aux ground. This certainly CAN go to the battery (and in my setup does), but it's not required technically required. I'm...

    12v Basics

Are you saying there's inaccurate information in my post? If so, please, let me know, so I can rectify it. I certainly don't want to give people bad information. I've had to research, learn, and work my way through this information myself, to develop the knowledge that I do have. I will freely...

    12v Basics

That last diagram is a work in progress, as I'm constantly tweaking it a bit, as that's the system I've built for the back of my Xterra. Also, technically, ground doesn't NEED to go to the battery. You know this, but people new to the topic might not, but ground can go to anything conductive...

    12v Basics

The intent of this post is to help those who aren't very familiar with how 12v systems work, or where to start whe the it comes to building and wiring a 12v system. 12v basics Automotive electronics work on a 12 volt system. This is different than the 120v system in your house. 12v is...

    New Nissan Frontier...

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. The old Frontier is a solid platform, so why bother with a complete redesign of the frame is it's a solid starting point. They took that solid base, completely reworked the suspension, cab mounts, and a few other areas, and put a completely redesigned body...

    New Nissan Frontier...

I've been following the development of the '22 Frontier from the getgo. While it's a new truck on the outside, and inside the cab, pretty much everything else has been out for a bit. Engine/Trans combo debuted in the '20 model year. The frame is almost identical to the previous generation...

    SW Idaho Overlanding

Yeah, @David H and I were just on the other side of the river last weekend. I looked at the route, and from what I can see, there doesn't look to be a road along the side of the lake in that spot. Are you sure we can drive that part of the route? It doesn't look like we can to me.

Questions and musings about a solar generator and a refrigerator

I just did a 3 day trip with a similar setup in the back of my Xterra. Mine is wired so that the inverter must be switched on manually at the moment. This is a stopgap for me, since I plan on going with a LiFePO4 battery in the future. I will say, the setup worked fantastic. I use a rockpals...

Reaver's 03 Xterra XE "Gamora" build thread

Well, overall, the truck is more or less done. I might lift it a bit down the road, replace shocks, etc, but for the most part, I've been very happy with it as is. These things are awesome, and don't require much in the way of mods. I still haven't put my front locker in, or my 180 amp...

Reaver's 03 Xterra XE "Gamora" build thread

No sleeping back there without the platform. With the way the seats fold (not flat), it would have been very uncomfortable. When I go without the family though, I always sleep in there. It's a bit tight with the fridge, and lower ceiling, but very comfortable once I lay down. Especially with my...

Thanks man! The storage setup definitely makes life easier, that's for sure. I'm actually considering building a second, modular layer to the setup that sits on top of the platform, and bolts in, giving me extra organized storage for when the family goes. As it stands right now, stuff ends up...

New subforum suggestion - Overlanding electronics and power

I will second this suggestion. Having a forum dedicated to 12v systems. There's a ton to learn, and lots of different options. It would be great to have a central forum section dedicated to asking questions, answering them, and providing wiring diagrams for all sorts of different 12v accessories.

Ok, just got back from a 3 Day trip on Sunday, and here are some observations I've made.... New switch panel needs to come out, as something is interferring with the circuit for my gauge cluster lights, and my light bar won't come on (I've checked the fuse for the dash lights, and it's fine, so...

    SW Idaho Overlanding

Hey George, so I have a question. Liana is considering driving on this trip as well, and I'm wondering if you have any insight as to what kinds of terrain we could encounter. Or, if you have the route already, could you email it to me, so I can show her where we will be heading?
