That's a great story @Michael, thanks for sharing! Sounds like you had some rough times. I'm glad to see how much everything has turned around for you.
Oh, and I totally agree with your Dad's great vehicle advice!
What are some trail repairs you've seen or done to get back to civilization?
*Split an empty can of beans. Wrap around exhaust leak. Secure with hose clamps.
*Trailer hitch pin was the only thing wide and long enough to replace a missing radius arm bolt.
*Use the handle of a shovel inside a...
Tent first for sure. Time slips by too fast, along with the sunlight, and before you know it's past dark o'clock and all you want to do is sleep.
Kitchen based on the trip. I try to keep it simple whenever possible. Food on the fire or setup the table and stove.
Chair at the fire ring.
Cook...
Heat can certainly be an issue. Another is atmospheric pressure. Every couple thousand feet of elevation change can cause the can to bulge or contract. I've had gas explode out when opening the latch. I was snow camping in the morning around 7,000', and opened the can ~200' above sea level in...
Still need to tick that one off my list. I have a friend who's done it and we have been trying to run it together for a while. He just got his truck back yesterday after one year (long story) at the mechanic. It's running but the motor needs more run-in time and he needs to check everything.
I've never liked using repellent and just endured the bugs until I found the Bugs Away shirts from ExOfficio. They have built in uv protection and the repellent is within the fibers themselves, not just something sprayed on at the end of production. They have a few other great features that...
Mud seems to be a pretty common bane. I'm right there with you. I find while it's fun to play in the mud, the aftermath is usually just not worth it. Enough to splash onto the body is cool, but anything over the axles and I start getting leary pretty quickly.
In most situations, listening to your gut is the better call. Don't get in over your head, and hit the trails with a friend who has some more experience. Turning back is a learning experience, and something everyone should know when to do. And don't forget to ask questions in the mean time...
What do you think will be a typical trip for you? How many people, and for how many days?
Typically a cooler lists how many cans of soda it can hold to visualize the volume. If you're looking at a cooler that needs ice, you'll need a bigger cooler than you may think. A Rotomolded case is super...
I once saw a strange light in the sky. I was coming home from a day volunteering at Cow Mountain when there was quite literally, a strange light in the sky. What had me so interested and confused was the way the light not only shifted, but appeared to emanate from a single point that was moving...
The battery should be low on the list when it comes to things to protect against water. Electric fans are a safe bet and as mentioned, dielectric grease on every electrical connection. Aside from the engine bay, think about the interior. The door seals probably have a little gap somewhere that...
So what condition(s) have made you question if you REALLY wanted to be out there? There are more than this, but these are some of what I have personally experienced.
Ascents- You may only see the sky, not the trail in front of you. Front tires can lose traction and steering may be vague from...
HA! My partner loves her Kia Soul! She always wanted a red one and we wound up finding it outside of Sacramento about a year ago. I'm sending this link and will give her the wink ;)
I've run this basic setup for over 8 years. Started out with 2 red Blitz cans. During my first crossing of the Mojave Road, a lot of fuel spilled on the tuck from the CARB caps. After that I've picked up some NATO style cans. I've never had a single issue with leaks, even though the gaskets...
