    Traction Mats And Thier Uses

He means if the vehicle needs a corner lifted to make it sit level, you can stack them and park on top. That way you're not fighting gravity all night or rolling into the side of the RTT.

    Overland Expo 2016 Coverage

I'll be in classes the whole time and haven't heard of any trail runs. Is there an OB HAM frequency?

    Traction Mats And Thier Uses

One time out in the snow I saw a truck with chains spin their tires on a pair of MaxTrax. The lugs were just melting and grinding away, destroying it in the process. Stack two (or more) of your mats for more support when bridging small gaps.

Our Overland Expo Route - Join Us on the Road!

@Michael Myself and a buddy hope to arrive in Kingman around the same time. He has a trailer so we'll see. What's the address in Kingman? It has Beatty, NV listed.

    Overland Expo 2016 Coverage

I'm staying in Buttonwillow, CA Wed night, and will get to the lake Thursday afternoon ~4pm I hope. My rig will be parked the whole time so won't be able to monitor CB. If there's anyone with a 2m HAM out there I'll have my HT on me. I'm usually on 146.460.

How to reduce the noise on a roof rack?

Flooring can help, and also makes a great platform for standing on or loading smaller items. A popular one is FarmTek non-overlapping chicken coop flooring. This stuff is near indestructible and will last forever. If there's no option for a manufacturer's fairing, try using some cardboard and...

    Theft Prevention

I used to have a nice back strapped behind the driver's seat. It had a small-ish first aid kit, a couple knives, a headlamp. You know, a nice day bag. Anyways, during the reception at a friend's wedding I went to the truck to get a bottle opener and the rear window was smashed and the bag was...

Here's the BLM map. The first gpx file I posted is what I made in Google Earth, before the trip. The second gpx file is what I recorded on the trail. The trail system past the Northern Staging Area gate was locked. I'm not sure why, or for how long.

    DIY Roof rack

If you want to use ratchet straps on your rack, I'd stick with 1" tubing. A good hook will have an opening that can accept a 1" tube. Build a rack that can support a good amount of weight, but don't overload it with gear. Those "mounting points" in @BEAR's picture are just plain scary!

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

No pictures, but I did have to replace the K540 mount for my HAM antenna. There was so much Manzanita at Knoxville a couple weeks ago that it broke the metal tab right off!

    Toilet Time

I agree that the 5 gallon bucket route is kinda bulky, but you can save some space by storing all of your WagBags, TP, wipes, etc. inside the bucket when not in use. Always pack extra WagBags too. There seems to be one or two people who didn't pack enough. Or, sometimes, there's a box in a...

    Toilet Time

Pack it out is the best choice, but not always the easiest. If you dig a cat hole, there should be at least 6" of dirt on top, and if you are near water, at least 200' away. I like the 5 gallon bucket, detachable seat (with folding lid) and wagbags route. A short walk to some trees or rocks is...

Snorkels - More Popular in Australia?

All of the diesel engines in Australia help the snorkel cause too. They fair better with deep water crossings compared to their gas powered counterparts. Just because you've raised the air intake doesn't mean the rest of the engine is ready for deeper water... Do you have a cut off switch for...

Imagine being on the valley floor at the campsite when the fire was raging all around! I want to see video of that.

    Vehicle Tools (Merged thread)

Crawl in, on, around and under your truck to see what are the most common sized nuts and bolts you'd need to work with. You may only need one or two deep sockets so don't get an entire set. Same thing for 12 pt sockets (mostly for my brake calipers). Don't worry about specialty tools unless you...

    Optima Yellow top

Many years ago an Optima seemed to be a good option. I had a Blue Top for a bit. But after seeing one get an internal short and cause one of the terminals to glow red hot and burn through welding gloves, I switched to a Die Hard Platinum marine battery. Sears no longer carries that so I have a...
