Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
Honestly, it's totally worth it to shell out for Gaia Premium for the extra layers. The VMUM layer is phenomenally useful as it shows every single forest service road on public land. I leave that layer toggled on permanently. There's also Public Land and Private Land layers which I use all the...
Yep, it's a full round trip there and back. Picks you up in the morning, drops you off a the Grand Canyon for a few hours, then brings you back in the late afternoon. I haven't done it yet, but it's definitely on our family bucket list

We have an Oztent Foxwing 270deg awning and use it all the time. We're in the desert where shade is hard to come in many spots and it's a life saver. Takes about 3 or 4 minutes to set up, and same to take down. We also have a floor saver (heli mat that lays on the ground) that is the exact same...
Last year I recall lots of talk about how it would likely be the last Off The Grid event due to the size of the club and the limitations of the trail and venue, but I haven't heard anything either way yet. Definitely interested to know so I can start planning if needed.
It was beautiful being in all that golden tall grass in Agua Fria, although it was slightly unnerving realizing that if a wildfire broke out we'd be absolutely screwed. I definitely need to schedule another trip up to that part of the state.
In other news, I really need to update this thread...
I'm in the desert so we don't get really big mud puddles regularly. Most of the water we encounter is during our monsoon season and it's typically in the form of rushing water in rivers and washes. If obviously shallow and not moving fast we just cautiously drive through, otherwise we have to...
Oh, i should point out some features of the JKU manual trans that are related to off-roading.
Hill Assist: If you are on an incline, when you release the brake, the brakes will continue to hold you for about a second before letting go. This is plenty of time to move your foot to the gas and get...
I'll vouch for the manual trans JKU as well. I have a 2016 Rubicon with the 6-speed manual, the rubicon manual trans gearing is 4.11 which has been great for us so far. Like @Bob (Fishingbob) said, they can be hard to find used, heck, even brand new mine was hard to find. I live in a metro area...
I'm @handsomeanchor on IG. I almost exclusively post overlanding/adventuring related content. Every once and a while i'll post something about some space-related stuff i'm involved with.
The wife and I decided to start up a vlog to share our adventures as a family. The plan is to release one video a week, we just pushed out #3 this morning. These first few videos cover a quick weekend trip to the local mountain just so we could practice recording and editing. Not a super...
This is by far the best looking DIY platform i've seen for a JKU. Great work! The way you took the time to cut those perfect contours in the back section, holy smokes, I hope you took a few minutes to just sit there and appreciate how well you did after you installed it all.
Family and I will be heading out for a 3 or 4 day in the Chiricahua Mountains next week if anybody is interested. We'll likely roll out from Tucson on Thursday July 26 and come back that Sunday.
PM me if you think you might be interested in joining
We're definitely the take it slow/safe type, especially for larger puddles and water crossings. Since we typically adventure in some pretty remote and unpopulated areas of the Sonoran Desert that are not often traveled by others, it's be pretty risky to take chances "just for fun". If we break...
Shade is a premium here in the desert, so when we were deciding on which awning we went with the Oztent Foxwing. It just throws out so much more shade than the straight awnings. You can attach an Oztent to any of the sections and there's also attachable walls available. We also use the Oztent...
Oh yeah, to add to what @Robert Jordan pointed out: There's a ton of amazing historic National points of interest. One time when we were driving back down from a trip to Zion in Utah we stopped at damn near every single brown sign we saw along the highway. We hit up Pipe Spring National Monument...
