HAM Radio Call Sign Check-In Thread

FYI: GMRS and FRS channels are the same. So if you have FRS radios, you can communicate with GMRS Channel 15 as well

    Frequency Discussion and Education

The ham frequency was chosen to be different from the GMRS/FRS channel because the two frequency allocations for those licenses/regulations do not overlap. Regarding studying for your Technician, I'm totally with you on wondering why the exam doesn't actually go over information about practical...

    Waterproofing the Plano Sportsman box

I did this mod about a little over a year ago and they've held up just dandy. the seals still look just as good as the day i first stuck them on. For what it's worth, I didn't use any glue or anything, i just used the adhesive backing that comes on the seals. EDIT: i did make sure to clean the...

It IS legal to monitor those frequencies, but, generally speaking, when people say they "programmed a Baofeng to work on FRS/GMRS" what they mean is that they transmit using that radio as well, which IS NOT legal.

    Overlanding and Minimalism

Great thing to point out. Minimalism should hopefully never mean a trade off of more risk of safety or becoming dangerously stranded

    Overlanding and Minimalism

We also take a minimalist approach to our gear. Since we're a family of 5 in a Jeep JKU, a lot of it was out of necessity - we just didn't have room for lots of the cool gadgets and such. Most of the gear we bought was because we realized there was something we really needed, or, in a lot of...

    Frequency Discussion and Education

I see you've edited your post, so i'll reply to the new stuff I was honestly trying to help you by pointing you at the relevant information, with the added point of "lots of the answers to the pedantic stuff is literally 'Because the FCC says so'". As others have pointed out in this thread...

    Frequency Discussion and Education

I don't think anybody here has a problem with you asking questions, what may be rubbing people the wrong way is the combative way that you appear to be asking them. The spirit of this thread was to announce some common agreed upon calling frequencies and channels to serve as a starting point...

    Frequency Discussion and Education

I would like to address this right now, however, because i won't go into actual frequencies behind the FRS/GMRS channels in the guide i'm writing. Overland Bound should always refer to channels only in the case of FRS and GMRS and always refrain from referring to the actual frequencies behind...

    Frequency Discussion and Education

@n2jeepn Thank you for voicing your questions and concerns. In the original thread I laid out an outline and a proposal for an article that will help demystify these recommendations for people unfamiliar with the boring details of FCC rules, in addition to explaining some etiquette that is...

@Michael is there a way to have that forum header link to a forum post? I'm thinking I could write up a little Bootcamp article about trail communication practical use and etiquette. We have two comms articles in Bootcamp currently, but both of them are primarily about the gear/licensing side...

Channel 6 is a lower power channel, so only a max of 5W on GMRS (2W on an FRS radio). We typically use GMRS 15 here in Baja Arizona. Benefits are that it is still a shared FRS frequency but on a GMRS radio you can blast up to 50W (Still 2W max on FRS radio).

I think 146.46 is great to continue using and promote as a calling frequency with an explanation of calling frequency etiquette, which is generally: make contact, then QSY to a new, typically nearby, frequency for extended conversations. "Lets move up to 146.535 to continue this conversation"

THIS. Yep. that's my biggest issue with CB radio. With CB, any old Joe Schmo can go buy a radio, but typically, they lack even the basic knowledge of how they work, so therefore a majority of people who have a CB "installed" in their rig have it setup incorrectly, usually not tuned and not...

Single unified communication system for Overland Bound members

Yep, these threads pop up pretty regularly, and every time I see one it feels like it's just people looking to be talked out of going through the "work" of getting a ham license. The test really is easy, everybody, just do it!

I have my amateur license and a GMRS license so I run ham, GMRS, and CB in the rig. I absolutely HATE using anything other than ham though. An amateur license in the U.S.A. is FREE in many places (or a maximum of $15) so really everybody should strongly consider getting it if you wanna get...
