What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

I tore the heater core box cover and fan out of my K2500, looking for a rats nest in there after driving it a month ago and having a horrid smell. I didn't find anything in there though and took it for a drive and the smell was not present this time. I may have had some stagnant water in the...

    Rear diff. upgrades?

For something you drive quite a bit on road, I would look at the Truetrak or an ARB. The lunch box lockers are great off-road but have a tendency to make on road driving in slick conditions tricky. A g80 is great but has a bad rep for exploding because people treat them like your standard...

Calling all CB experts! I need CB Help!

Are you attempting to to do this while you are close to buildings or other obstacles? I've never had much love for the fiberglass antennas. I've had my best luck running a full 102" whip and spring or 6" stub. They swing around and will leave a nasty welt on any bystanders, but they just work...

    Lighting up Camp

I was considering putting these on the sides of my rack for light at camp as well as side lighting on the trail. I was wondering how difficult it is to power the strips you cut? I'm not familiar with the connectors the ad talks about using with them.

Noob question regarding a full-size SUV and suspension upgrades

You're more than welcome! I think that setup would be great for you. By all means though, go research for yourself to see if you agree with me. This is just my thoughts based on what I know about the GMT400 and what I saw in the videos of where you want to go with it.

    Handheld Radio - HAM?

Those get a lot of flack. They are cheap little radios that are not actually "type accepted" for amateur use by the FCC so not legal. However, many use them, I have one of the UV-5RA Baofengs myself. They can cause interference and are not great radios on the whole but they do work. You need to...

Noob question regarding a full-size SUV and suspension upgrades

Ok, I'm not familiar with any of those trails so I had to look them up on YouTube to see what they are like. There was a video of a stock GMT400 on a couple little ledges on the Maze Overlook and I think with a little work, your Suburban will do great for you. My thoughts on it are this: Do...

Noob question regarding a full-size SUV and suspension upgrades

Well, I'm not sure how your off-roading compares with my off-roading. I come from the more hard-core rock-crawling end of things. Plus, I live on the east coast where trails are tight and covered in brush most of the time. My last wheeler was a double locked K5 on 35's and reckless disregard for...

Do You Keep a Vehicle Journal?

I use aCar as well and enter the transaction data on the notes so I have my warranty info if I need it. It also tracks fuel mileage so I can see when I'm having issues as well. I considered a spreadsheet but I just don't use a home computer very often these days. My phone is the PDA I dreamed...

    radios

Locally, FRS is taking over. FRS/GMRS share channels so that covers about everyone, the small inexpensive hand held radios are great for starters and you can move up to GMRS with more power and vehicle mounted radios with the license. I'm a ham and there are a few others locally that are as...

    Coffee Set Ups

After you open the foil wrapper, the coffee is basically wrapped in a filter and sealed. Makes cleanup easier and prevents such a mess in the room.

What is your must cook meal or must have food for camping.

One of the guys I camp with does a big pot the first night on the trail and then saves the leftovers for the second night. It works pretty good for him.

    Coffee Set Ups

Thanks. It just kinda dawned on me as we were packing up. I usually grab the soap and shampoo to keep at home for house guests or to take camping and thought, why not? It's worth a shot and I need to run my stove a bit more often anyways.

    Coffee Set Ups

We've done some traveling this winter and I've been collecting the coffee packs from the rooms we've stayed in. I'm going to do some experimenting with just using them as "tea bags" in a pot of water or pouring the hot water through them like the percolator does and see how that turns out.

Noob question regarding a full-size SUV and suspension upgrades

Glad I could help! The GMT400 is my FAVORITE truck platform. I've spent a good chunk of time researching them and I've owned 3 so far. I remember going through this trying to buy shocks for our 99 Suburban and trying to figure out the best shock option for the best price so I had some faint...

Noob question regarding a full-size SUV and suspension upgrades

OK, so my memory isn't perfect, go figure! The K1500 rear shocks are 1.5" longer fully compressed than the Tahoe/Suburban (Tahoe: 14.6" vs K1500: 16.1"). That translates to them being good if you run a short AAL in the rear or extend your bump stops to make sure they don't bottom out...

Noob question regarding a full-size SUV and suspension upgrades

That's the right ones, Bilstein 4600s IIRC. They made the original Z71 shocks but GM had then painted red. Let me double check the part numbers here in a few and I'll make sure.

HAMFEST: Richmond Va Frost Fest 2/3/18

I'll be heading to Richmond tomorrow to be there bright and early when the doors open at the Richmond speedway Saturday. I'll be monitoring the W4RAT and 147.555 at the fest. Give me a shout if you're around or message me here, we'll have a meet-up! You don't have to be a ham to attend and...

Little Girl the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser

I really like that rack over the spare tire. When it comes time for a bumper with a tire carrier on it, I'm going to have to look into one of those. That looks like a great place for a tote with your recovery gear in it.

    1/4 wave....1/2 wave 2M

Hard to say with certainty, but being a short wave-length, probably the same as a vertical dipole, using the ground wire you have as the other half of the antenna and basically isolating itself from the body ground, opting for the coax back to the radio instead. I'm not a physicist, so take my...
