Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
Just joined your group and downloaded this track. We are looking for a few trails to mix into a family trip to Gatlinburg sometime this year. Any suggestions on camping around these trails. Both dispersed to get away and established to get a shower? :grinning:
I've almost been caught in the builders trap. My issue was the limited amount of time and money I have being spread over multiple projects. I've been eliminating the projects that don't fit with my long term goals and focusing on getting things done on my Xterra.
I'm amassing parts for when...
Since being introduced to the off-roading world around 2005, I have owned and used a Hi-Lift jack. From pulling it off the top of my Jeep to repair a collapsing shelf or using it to fell a tree in the direction we needed it to fall to breaking down a tire to clean debris out of the bead or...
I got one of the new Medium First Aid packs from Blue Ridge Overland Gear and one of their map pouches. The first aid kit fits where the factory one in my Xterra was but holds a lot more stuff. Plus, it will hang from the straps on the gate and you can just unzip it rather than having to remove...
Lord don't run that 3k one! You'll just be turning all your power to heat. I don't know your engine specs, but for most off-road use you don't want much over stock stall. There just isn't a real need for it. A lot of guys try to run grossly overbuilt engines on the trail and that's just bad...
Thanks for the compliment! I've spent years thinking about my setup when I had my K5. I'm having to relearn everything about the Xterra now! If I can be honest with you, if you're not looking to do really hardcore stuff, you could sell your 6" kit and one ton axles and snag a SF 14b rear, a 3/4t...
That's a pretty similar setup to what I have. I just added a ridgeline last fall but I've been too busy to give it an actual test beyond just going out to a local campsite with a friend and just "hanging" around for a while.
Sorry... This is still a sore spot with me. I really wish we didn't have to worry about security. I use the cable a lot though. It was run through my receiver's safety chain loops and was locked to the cooler and large tote full of gear on my hitch carrier last summer when we went to...
Welcome guys! Hank, there's a thread on hammock camping around here somewhere! When I'm out somewhere alone, I throw my hammock gear in the X and just use it since it's easier than dealing with our 4 man tent by myself.
Some friends and I went on a trip last November to Uwharrie Nat'l Forest in NC. We've been there many times over the last decade and always camped at the Hunt Camp off 109 near the Outpost. As usual, we just left our gear sitting out on the picnic tables and hit the trails. The first morning...
I have chosen to do a winch first on my 07 Xterra. A locker only helps you, a winch helps the whole group.
I also think people believe a locker will make up for inexperience, but that's rarely the case. I don't know your background but I try to get people to get out and use what they drive...
There is always the option of carrying two antennas. One for local and convoy use and one of the ones like @Prerunner1982 mentioned for longer distance use should you have the need.
We don't have an abundance of spending money and putting around $100 into one of these just isn't a priority right now. Last summer I grabbed one of the little brick units Wal-Mart keeps at their checkouts for about $6.
It charges with the same micro-usb that my cell phone and tablet use and...
I just sold my 84 K5. It was built to be a crawler and was entirely too rough to go overlanding comfortably in but I have some thoughts from my build that might help you along.
I'm a proponent of the automatic. Having grown up on a farm, I spent my fair share of time pushing a clutch. I daily...
Congrats on trying to become a ham! Hope your test goes well.
As for antennas, I've had very good luck with a simple Tram NMO dual band from Amazon.
TRAM 140MHz-170MHz + 430MHz-470MHz Dual Band NMO Antenna
For $13 they are disposable should they be damaged and I've easily worked repeaters...
