Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.
That and the total lack of benefits for salary folks at the mill keep me climbing towers in the snow and working on boilers when it's 100*F outside. I can't stand sitting still.
Normally you'll have a 1/4 wave or a 5/8 wave but the 1/2 or 5/8 wave will have higher gain which tends to have stronger signals at longer distances but they are longer and more likely to be damaged in dense brush. I run a cheap 1/4 wave that costs $12. If I wreck it, oh well. I've not had any...
Continued work on the cargo rack for the Xterra. Our folding table will fit under the rack. We may have to lower it in the future and his with a different style tote if these prove to be too tall.
The last thing I bought was a pair of SPC UCAs for the Xterra. I'm gonna order a roof basket today and the parts to instal it. I'm going to add brackets to carry traction mats to the drivers side and I'm considering a PVC solar water "heater" to the passenger side. We'll just have to see how...
I started a thread in the trip planing section asking for some info on the area, instead of starting a duplicate post, here's the link.

Any help anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated!
Last weekend would have been easier as there was nothing planned. This Saturday is possible, but it would probably be 8-9pm EST as we have a trip to town penciled in to stock up on some stuff in the pantry.
What day were you thinking and what time?
She's pretty understanding but I don't think a full day on the trail with a truck full of kids and dog is going to pass muster. She's fine with doing that for vacation and what-not but I try to treat her pretty good on her birthday and Mother's day. Plus she's back in nursing school now and as...
Last year we did a road trip that included a couple days in DC then camping on the Outer Banks. This year, we are talking about spending a couple days knocking around Cherokee, Pisgah, and Nantahala Nat'l Forests followed by a few nights in a hotel in Gatlinburg.
I've got a few maps with tracks...
I swapped in some black bezel headlights from the later Xterras into my 07. I think they look really good on the darker colors.
It needs a bath, I might go rinse it off the evening.
You certainly go "all in" when you do something, eh buddy? I'm looking forward to seeing how this thing works out. Cheek out some of the chopped Patrols from Aus-land if you liked how the pickups and such worked for full on overland rigs.
Pott's is close to Roanoke and is quite a bit more challenging than Flag Pole or Big Levels. Not the place for stock vehicles with inexperienced drivers. I could probably get my Xterra through most of it but I know I wouldn't stand a chance on the sand notch and burnt bridge would be...
I wish we didn't have to deal with DST. It's confusing enough not using 24hr format but then having to deal with the -4 or -5 and all that.
I need to invest in one of the nice dual time atomic clocks to have in the shack. Maybe that'll be my birthday present.
Next weekend might be doable for me. The next few weekends after that I'm not sure about. Are you 3 hours behind EST? If we try 15 we might be dealing with "gray line". Most evenings I have a pipeline to SA at dusk.
I'd be up for it. I think most mobile antenna systems can do the upper end of 40 pretty easily and 20 no problem. Easily in the general portions.
I've participated in a few big nets like this up on 40 and you had 2-3 control stations. The net started late on the east coast, like 9-10 so the...
Our biggest problem is there's 5 of us and that's a lot of water to carry to bathe in. If we can find places to hop in a creek, I'm good with a quick bath like that.
I picked up a FT19ooR to set up in my garage so I can monitor local repeaters while out there working rather than trying to use my handheld. While I was setting it up, I added 146.520 and 146.460 to it so they are scanned now as well. The 1900 has a neat feature where it will scan the WX...
