Technically it could but the cling wrap doesn’t breath and that might cause issues with healing. Really the goal is to reposition the skin and then hold it in place as best as possible. There are lots of improvised ways to accomplish this.
Well thank you and that’s a great idea! I agree that there are too many people “teaching” the wrong message. I’m just trying to empower everyone to feel comfortable taking care of wounded and sick people in the backcountry.
Hey everyone!
Had some time today and thought I’d goof around with creating a YouTube channel. I don’t have any well edited videos, cool music, or all the other stuff but I do have lots of dash cam vids to daydream to and other randomness related to overlanding and I’m sure medical stuff coming...
Yes and maybe. Heat will definitely degrade the adhesive on the bandages etc so keep an eye on them and rotate them. I’ll sometimes buy new bandaids for the rig and bring the others in the house. As for the medications this is a maybe. It might decrease the effectiveness of the meds but usually...
I’ll post more later but here is a short list of what I think are must haves.
1. GAP tool to check and clear codes etc
2. Good tires. If you have the 18 in rims you can run BFG KO2s which work well with these trucks.
3. Sliders. I personally have and recommend the tactical rovers sliders...
Hey everyone!
I’m taking my 7 yo son camping this weekend. Just a quick overnight in the snow hopefully. I’m thinking of heading up hwy 4 to Arnold and then there are some tracks that head off into the hills. Nothing too crazy most likely but the storm may change that. This is an open invitation...
Try Rugged Radios for voice activated comms. They are used in race cars etc. I use them in my Defender 110 hooked up to my HAM radio. I use a push to talk button (PTT) but it can be voice activated (VOX). My set up allows me to listen to music and make call from my phone and VOX comms for four...
The RATS tourniquet is fine and will work. As it is narrower that the CAT the pressure is only applied to a smaller space and can be more painful to the patient. I prefer the CAT tourniquet as you can continue to apply more pressure after the initial wrap. Both get the job done.
Haven’t posted it, I think it’s episode 3 and we just released 2 but I totally agree that scene safety is a critical component to care in the field. Increasing the number of patients while decreasing the number of trained responders is a bad outcome.
@mjhereon: thank you for your service! I totally agree which is why I have an episode already shot regarding scene safety. Please let me know if there are other topics you think should be covered as well.
I’ll chime in here for Michael as the Medical Ambassador. Yes, there are plans for regional training in first aid. We are developing a platform for standards and standardized training. In the short term I’m looking for a date soon to host a class local to the SF Bay Area. There won’t be any...
I’ve done a simple chainsaw cut, here’s the link: What would you do here? Chainsaw Injury [WARNING: GRAPHIC IMAGE IN THE POST]

I’m planning an “On...
I would not use hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on any wound. Those fluids are no longer recommended as cleaning. Regular drinking water is sufficient. You want to really just pour it over and not try to irrigate or force the water in for a puncture wound. You will just drive the dirt and bacteria...
Ah...snake bites....so much myth and folklore about treatment. In the simplest explanation, treating snake bites comes down to this: get the person to the hospital for anti-venom as fast as possible.
Now, along the way there are dos and don’ts which I’ll list here. I’m going to start with the...
Vasoline is pretty safe from an infection standpoint. Not much will grow in it.
Was the tube of stuff “petroleum jelly”? Or something else?
You can get single shot tubes of vasoline but I don’t think you need to. For most people here we aren’t off the grid for weeks at a time. If you got...
A non-stick would be the best but in a pinch you could use regular gauze but when you remove it you would want to soak it with water first to help keep it from sticking. It wouldn’t be the end of the world if the skin came off a few days later. This wound did well and the skin survived but I had...
@Correus
Not sure what you are asking. I recommend a small boo boo kit with bandaids, etc to care for small scrapes and cuts. It lives in an easy to get to when the rig is packed location. Something to take care of the little cuts and scrapes we all get just from being outdoors. If you have...
I strongly believe you need three kits: boo boo, basecamp first aid/medical, and a trauma kit.
They each have a specific function and when you try to have one kit do the work of all three you end up with a poorly designed and difficult to use kit. Having to dig through aspirin and band aids to...
