If it is closed Prewitt ridge road might be a good option.

I've created a back up route to Prewitt Ridge Road and Cone Peak (which is closed) (added to the original post) if Old Coast Road is closed. Only down side is it's an extra hour and a half drive from Monterey.

Wasn't able to get through when I tried calling.
I added a backup route this morning which is a bit lower down but the road and has one route open

Called about 4 times so far today on both numbers. Both numbers goes straight to voicemail telling me to go to www.parks.ca.gov/pbssp, which has no info on Old Coast Rd.
Hopefully there will be some signage prior to the trail but I would imagine that could be doubtful

Prewitt Ridge works for me anyway, been wanting to scout it out for a camping trip, heck I just might drag all my gear down with me and plunk down there for the night.
I did Prewitt last may. Beautiful spot. Don't camp any where close to the little pond or the bugs will get you. Easy trail. Have fun.

I wouldn't mind Prewitt Ridge either, as I haven't drive there. Looking at the map, there are a number of campgrounds in the area.
So I found some better information on Old Coast Road closure here:

Essentially the first half of the road is open (needing 4x4) but the second half is closed. Not sure if it's worth going halfway or not. I think where the road is closed is where a bridge might have been.
