Believe it or not that looks like calcium buildup.

Do you use car washes? They all use recycled water now, and the dissolved solids build up over time.

I recently noticed this issue with one of my badges as well. It's located on the rear door of my FJ and has the discoloration as well. I noticed the badge I have mounted on the front grill doesn't have any. I wonder what the cause is..

use fishing line. then alcohol for the glue. use a microfiber towel.

That's how I do it!
