US East Northern VA / MD Monthly Meetups

I live in Alexandria and bought a 2016 4Runner Trail today and looking to get into this. Right off the bat I know I need to look into a tire and lift combination but any recommendations for where to go with a stock vehicle? Also, is there a lot to offer at the flea market that has been discussed or is this a new thing?

I am an active duty Marine and have camping gear with a decent ability to suffer in silence, and have access to the auto hobby shops on various bases so I am good there.
Welcome! Firstly, most might say a good plan is to leave it stock and run the stock tires down for however long that takes. Then when you but new tires, buy the ones you want and lift at same time. Personally I'm running on all- seasons because that's my stock tire, so I'm very anxious to get them swapped. But I've taken my truck out enough to know how important the new tires are compare to, say, a lift kit. For me I need to lift first, then I can get bigger tires. So you should definitely take yours out stock on some lightweight trails etc. Then you'll know if new tires are really your current #1 priority. Maybe armor or sliders are more important etc.
As for the flea market, I can't answer to that, this will be our first time there. I do know that Blue Ridge has good bags and molle holders, even if the flea market doesn't offer much you could browse their stuff as it will likely be on sale [I'm hoping].

I don’t know if stock vehicles are safe anymore without a certain someone [emoji23]

Welcome to OB and thank you for your service.
Now for my 2 cents:
You have a 2016 4Runner. You should have 31" tires already and they will do fine for now. Your suspension is new and will also do fine for now. The first thing I would suggest is rock sliders so you don't damage the body. Then recovery gear. As mentioned, if you go out with a group there will be other rigs to get you out if needed. Then you can look at a lift and bigger tires. This will be my first trip to the Bedford flea market. They should have some good camping accessories. Plus meeting other overlanders. Sounds like you are off to a good start.

That is all.

Hey now! Us Jeep guys gotta stick together! Yotas are taking over the overland game! (Or maybe Jeeps weren't even a competitor :fearscream:)
No! I envy the straight axle. Would love to have a Jeep. But I think the Jeep and Toyota do RULE. Can't go wrong with either.

I’m jealous they don’t make a cool winch bumper for my truck. But when I get a JL RUBI my options shall become unlimited [emoji16].

They seem to look okay on 4Runners. With a little modification.

The only benefit of me having the portable is I can use it off the front or back of the truck. So it’s great if I ever had issues if I was on a trail alone.

I hear you. I've been traveling and overlanding for over a month now. A few times I've taken the easy way around because I'm solo.
