River rd is pretty cool. Air down some and you’re good. Some of the roads marked 4wd only are laughable. You can drive a few in a Corolla. I think the only thing on Black Gap is that wall, otherwise it looks very doable

I‘d recommend going after a Midland mobile radio instead. Along the lines of the MXT115 or MXT275. The range will be much better with an external antenna.
Basic code wasn’t hard until you got to about 18wpm. My grandmother earned her ticket at age 70, and topped out at Advanced class because she couldn’t quite hit 20. I did the same thing, hi hi. I did upgrade to Extra later.
The NP was very crowded 2 weeks ago. No worries if you;re on the dirt roads, but plan ahead for the popular spots on paved roads. Several of the remote campsites we saw were pretty cool, although, I wouldn't personally camp down on the river.
