I patched a burst radiator in the middle of nowhere in big bend with some JB weld recently. I’d have never thought about taking any, but luckily another friend did. Small and easy to stow, there’s now some in my kit.
We all learn little tidbits over time, so it never hurts to ask questions...

Downtown Lubbock, Tx still has brick streets in quite a few places. The last I knew they were designated historic landmarks so were maintained and not replaced.
144.39 is the US calling frequency for APRS. Might be packet in general, I don’t recall. The hardware itself will repeat any signal heard, and in the case of APRS specifically, put it onto APRS.FI, in other words the internet.
You should be able to do quite a bit for $500. For radios I'd suggest sticking with Icom, Kenwood, Alinco. I know Yeasu has an overland following, but I can't say good or bad. They were not a go to choice in the 80s.
