Thanks for the input, and your experiences! I've towed a lot, well still do. I'm used to being limited on lanes and the reduced speed limit, so that doesn't bother me too much - but is a good point for sure. Agreed, a trailer is going to be difficult when you have to turn around. At least I...
I wouldn't say a winch is a replacement for a shovel, they have different purposes and I'd say both are things I'd want for solo adventuring. But a winch I'd consider something that he would "add to his truck" like he asked about, a shovel is just a piece of gear... I wouldn't consider it an...
Hey OB folks, I'm looking for your first-hand experience with an Overland trailer. I'm currently kicking-around the idea of an overland trailer for use with my WJ but would love some real world feedback.
My rationale for a trailer is as follows:
The WJ is a great, relatively small size - but...
If you're planning to go truly solo, like no other rigs, then the only thing I'd suggest is a winch for self-recovery. Otherwise you should be good to get started. Like you, I also have a RV and won't be stopping those trips, but look to Overlanding for my simple, short trips.

I think your plan is pretty solid, in general. You can't really go wrong with a JL Rubicon. If I was doing a trailer I'd actually probably do a 2-door JL. That way the overall package is just that much shorter, and a 2-door JL is just so maneuverable and easy to get just about anywhere...
Can I also recommend this: I'm often changing somebody else's wheel/tire, so the different sizes are handy. What I like about this setup is the open space in the case:
I keep a long 1/2 drive impact extension and a torque-stick in there. Super handy to have everything I need to swap wheels...
'03 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland, 4.7 HO. Lots done to it, you can read the whole story in my thread, but the short version is:
Rebuilt 4.7HO (problem areas addressed)
Larger all-AL radiator and e-fan conversion
JK Rubicon Recon (thicker front axle tubes and Cs) D44s - custom trussed and...
I know it's the latest "fad" tire, and already super popular in the Overlanding crowd but I really like my Patagonia M/Ts. I've run a ton of other M/Ts on my truck, which isn't a completely fair comparison because my truck is much heavier and I've always run a 80psi tire on the truck (I do use...
It sounds like your Jeep is basically ready to go. I'd go over it and do a basic "nut and bolt" and all the fluids, then just get a tent and sleeping bag and get out there.

Not the new-new 2021 Top Gear America, you're thinking of the one with Rutledge Wood, Tanner Foust and Adam Ferrara. The new-new 2021 with Dax Shepard, Rob Corddry and Jethro Bovingdon is on the Motortrend App and I see it under "Must Watch", "New Episodes" and if I just search for Top Gear. I...
It's definitely interesting to see the results here, the good old ground tent still prevails! It's currently my preferred method as well, for several reasons. First and foremost is what my Overland vehicle is: a lifted WJ. It's pretty tall (I haven't measured, but I can tell you it doesn't...
It'll be interesting to see how Dax is. I see him in Glamis from time to time, and he has a pretty bad arse Tatum sand rail. But his wife is a super-libby...
