Thanks, and I agree it's looking great - I just meant it wasn't a picture of me out actually doing something fun with it *YET*. The big aluminum rectangle on the bumper/tire carrier is a fold-down table. :)

Asking the "best rig to start with" is like asking blonde, brunette or redhead; or 1911 vs. Glock, beer or whiskey etc. (my answer on all of those is: all of the above ;) ).
All of that said, out of the 3 you have it narrowed down to I'd do the Colorado for the diesel, like you said. You can...
It sounds like you have a good start there. I like some 3/8 impact swivels and a 3/8 cordless impact (with a few extensions and such) on top of the stuff you listed. I also try to carry a few different gauges of wire and an assortment of connectors (including the butt connectors that have...
Even without the lockers of the Rubicon, your rig is extremely capable. A stock Sahara (or other non-Rubi) like yours will do what 99.9% of "Overlanders" would EVER ask of it in stock form with a better tire on it, which is exactly what you have. I'd try to link up with some local Jeep groups...
It sounds like they under-engineered the passenger side mount for the prodigious torque of the EcoDiesel if it's already a common failure. 2 weeks IMHO doesn't sound too bad for the part, especially if it's drivable in the meantime (or they give you a reasonable loaner). But 2 weeks tell me...
Looking forward to seeing your thread. It sounds like all you'll need to do is add-back some of the comfort and reliability you lost making it a crawler, and you'll be g2g. Mine is on 35"s now too.
Thanks!
Howdy.
A lot has changed since this post, you might say things got a bit out of...
It's basically done. He's tracking down an exhaust rattle, needs to add loops for safety chains on the rear bumper/hitch, and that's basically it. I might go get it this weekend, but because of work probably next:

What is your budget, and what are your goals? What type of "wheeling" and Overlanding? It sounds like you had something pretty hardcore in mind if you thought you'd need to axle-swap the P38.

I don't think it's accurate to write-off my reply as a "nay sayer." Give it another read, as a previous LR owner myself I think it's fair. I didn't even say a P38 in general is a terrible idea, but I think a $1300 222k mile Craiglist P38 almost certainly is a bad plan...

Not really much news, but the builder was able to get back to his shop, and get my Jeep up there. It's really just the hydraulic steering, e-brake cables, and a few other odds 'n ends. I'm still hoping to at least do some kind of overnight trip before the real winter hits, but that'll be tough...
The P38 Range Rover (that generation) is probably the generation that above all the others earned LR its horrible reliability reputation. I had a good buddy with one, and it actually wasn't bad to him, and to be honest I really like the rigs. But, you should know what you're getting into. At...
I fundamentally disagree that there's been a "decrease in DIY culture". I think the forum era really upped automotive DIY since people had access to support, write-ups and help that was unprecedented before (imagine before forums, if you were doing a clutch on your 3rd Gen 4Runner what were the...
Really impressive work. Am I reading right that you see 4.6psi of boost at idle? Also, I'm always a little suspect of in-motor bearing replacements. It looks like your bearings were pretty rough, you said #1 was really bad specifically. How did the journals look on the crank?

IIRC sand mode will turn basic "traction control" off, but I don't recall if it will still brake a single spinning wheel at one end. Either way, I suspect the rock mode might have been better there. I think where you will find it harder to stay w/ JL Rubis (or other solid/solid rigs) when it...
