US Comms - An Introduction to your Communication Options

Not typically as easily as with a HAM radio or if you could youd probably be limited to UHF only.

US Comms - An Introduction to your Communication Options

Not even illegally. It is pretty easy to get a HAM radio on GMRS. Not legally but its doable.

    Camp entertainment

Depends. If fire restrictions keep me from having a fire I've got no problem breaking out my nav tablet which I usually keep a few movies loaded on and watch a movie while I have dinner and some Jack and Coke. Chill in the hammock and just listen to the world (I don't sleep more than naps in a...

Frame rotted out in several places

Craigslist died to me as soon as they started charging to post items on there. No sense in using it now IMO, haven't been on it since. Any Wranlger is going to demand a premium unless you are willing to drive an older 2.5L I4 TJ. Even those can be pricey. Take a look at the Grand Cherokees...

    Campground or Boondock?

Social functions are mentally draining for me. I much prefer to be off somewhere undisturbed, with exception of a less than a handful of people I don't mind camping with. I'll make my way to a more established site once a week or so to maybe grab a shower and that's about it.

Do you run a DIY tarp awning?

I use a 6x8 canvas tarp I picked up on Amazon. It's a little more expensive than the cheap plastic tarps but MUCH quieter. I also have a Kelty Noah's tarp 12 that I can use if I want a larger cover area. I've seen folks use those long magnetic strips from Harbor Freight to temporarily...

OB Approved Overland Bound Comms Frequency Guide

Are those Uniden even capable of repeater ops? You're certainly going to be range limited with HTs and those antennas. Cant say for sure on CB without knowing antena location and what youre seeing for SWR readings. You may not have the oomph to get into the repeaters with the HT but if...

What kind of radios are you running? Antennas? You should have no problems on picking any of those up or hitting them from Wolfe City unless you live in a bowl.

OB Approved Overland Bound Comms Frequency Guide

Try these. You're going to hear a lot more constant traffic on fire/police for obvious reasons. Im not typically making calls in the blind when traveling. I may not even use the radio if im on my own and just passively monitor the call frequencies. Even still these are still mostly line of sight...

There's a GMRS repeater in Greenville thats pretty active. Should have no problem hitting it from Wolfe City. I hit it from Rockwall pretty regular. Theres a few HAM repeaters that are fairly active. One ontop of the hospital (primary skywarn unit) and two (a paired VHF and UHF repeater that...

    Go Solar! Especially us Californians....

I built something similar a while back though less refined. I would like to pick up another 100 watt panel or two so i could at least run a small cube fridge to salavge some perishables during an extended power outage at home. Its mostly used for 12v camp power though. I had a thread on it...

US Southwest DFW Monthly Recurring Overland Bound Meet - August 2019

There's some decent stuff in this area. https://goo.gl/maps/VPRxdJw66bANKRH18 And then there's the fire tower area on the K Trail. Two tiered area with enough room for a bunch of vehicles. May have to stack some rocks to level out though. https://goo.gl/maps/iK2aTL4rT7w69FDk8

US Comms - An Introduction to your Communication Options

You need to answer the question of what do others in your area run with or what do the people you run with run. It doesn you no good to have GMRS or HAM if all of the folks you run with have CBs.

US Southwest DFW Monthly Recurring Overland Bound Meet - August 2019

I know some spots we could hit in Oklahoma that are part of the Oklahoma Adventure Trail. Theyre not challenging trails or anything but theres some spots se could setup like a big camp site. Theyre about 2 to 3 hours north east of Dallas.
