If I had 10k to spend on a rig it would be a 4th gen 4runner w/ the 4.0 V6. It sure wouldn't be a jeep, but some jeep guy will post up and say how wrong I am. :)
I won't speak for everyone but I would assume most of us get them from places we've been or people we've met. The freebies I've gotten have always been from walking around Overland Expo. It's like patch heaven. Otherwise, you've got to buy them.
All I can offer you is this. If it starts at 8 or 9 don't show up at 8 or 9. The vendors were asleep and not active until like an hour after opening. I almost made the mistake of leaving early because I was annoyed. Then I hang out and had the time of my life once everyone was awake.
It's a vague question that can't be answered in such a way. An H1 is capable. However, it's not capable in many areas of the US due to width. A lifted F350 is capable. But it'll flop over on uneven terrain. A LC is capable. But deep mud will stop it. A Jeep Patriot is capable in NJ, while it may...
Capable simply means it'll do what you need it to. A civic is capable of driving to work every day. My truck is capable of going where I need it to. Etc, etc. Has nothing to do w/ weight, etc. There's too many people who buy a rig and then ask "What should I do to it?" Use it, and figure it out...
I'm envious of the lego one as well as the real one. Get well soon. There's some crazy light kits on the defender available online. I don't know if I'd have the patience to build this one though.
I guess it all depends on what you are looking to get out of it. It's weird. My observations have been that modified sports cars don't fetch ANY additional money for mods. However, my rig which would go for about 17,000 stock could probably sell for a lot more than that the way it sits. It seems...
I use the Midland MXT 115 w/ 6db gain antenna. Works well w/ good range. The higher wattage ones are cool but a lot of what we use it for is trail comms. I've got a solid mile in the wood and way more than that outside of wooded areas.
