My schedule is pretty full until December. There are a few other OB members that have been interested in getting some training in. Finding a venue can be tricky because of the cost of insurance. I'm doing some research to find areas that don't require $$$ for a day.
If you have any questions in...
Over the years, my role has become more of a trip planner, Trail Leader and Recovery Guy, all rolled into one. On a recent excursion out to Nevada, with just one other vehicle, I commented many times what a nice change of pace it was to not have the extra responsibilities. I did however plan and...
Leaving SF sometime Thursday morning and meeting with Bill Wester and his LR CT D110. Times will be worked out this weekend, but hope to be at CE a little after lunch:)
Will be on HAM 146.460. I have a CB but won't be monitoring that on the ride down.
I leave the pin striping on the truck. I'll only wash the underside if the truck has been through a lot of mud.
It's always good to do a post trip inspection. Check in, on and under the vehicle. Look for things that are damaged, leaking or aren't how they should be. This is something that...

How rusty is it? If it's just some surface scale you can use a wire brush to remove it. Spray some WD-40 on a rag and wipe down the length of the cable to prevent more rust from forming. Or if you want to upgrade, get 100' of 3/8" synthetic line (AmSteel Blue or Dyneema SK-75).
You can use synthetic winchline extensions instead of chain to winch with the Hi-Lift. This is something I've recently seen a picture of (the setup) and have since purchased the equipment to do it. But I have yet to do the setup and practice it in person.
I use Google Earth to plot out everything. You can type in regular addresses and get directions (including alternate routes) and input gps points. Then save it all as a .kmz file. I use gpsvisualizer.com to convert to a gpx file and upload that to gaiagps.com and it will sync to your devices...
You mean there's a reason to stack rocks other than when you're stuck? Haha!
I see similar things like that out in the desert. People love stacking rocks. It's amazing how well they can balance so many different sized rocks on top of each other.
Some trails have rock cairns stacked in places...
