  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

RTT or ground tent & why

A couple of ground tent advantages that I didn’t see mentioned: 1. Reserves the campground during the day while off on trails. 2. Provides an inconspicuous safe place to store the Jeeps’ doors while off on trails. 3. Ground tent is lightweight whereas a RTT and roof rack increase top heaviness...

    Winter camping options

I am looking for a way to make winter camping more tolerable for the wife, dogs, and myself. We’ve survived down to 18 degrees with our current setup, but it was miserable. Is there any practical way to heat a large tent? Electric heater: too big of a draw on car battery. Is there a battery...

Nice Jeep! I’ve been wondering how the tan top looks with rescue green

Who thinks they should bring back the Camel Trophy event?

I have been looking for something like this idea. There could be different vehicle classes (stock vs. lightly modified vs. heavily modified), but I don't actually think that's completely necessary. Overlanding has created a never-ending series of compromises with my rig. ATs or MTs? 3.73 gears...

Is there a trail that you wouldn't run again?

Looks like you’re not too far from me (also in CO). The traffic gets nuts across the front range in the summer and it really makes camping and 4x4ing a pain sometimes. It’s true for Moab and other areas too. The cold definitely clears things up. I still need to finish seven mile this winter and...

Going International in a Soft Top Jeep

Thanks for the advice. I think that confirms for me that I’ll eventually need a solid locking trailer. I suppose I should probably also look into replacing my plastic locking glove box and center console with the steel ones. Probably a locking hood too. Hopefully when I make those South America...

National parks that have good off road trails?

I drove through Badlands and completely missed that they have an off-road area. Thanks for the tip! I am going to have to find my way back there.

National parks that have good off road trails?

Medano Pass is a fun one (as mentioned above). There is a lot of sand driving and water crossings. The dunes are awesome, but can get hot and crowded. The "preserve" portion of the park, however, is an excellent place to find cooler weather and solitude. This summer we made a fun day trip of...

I suppose I haven't done the introduction yet. Location: Louisville, CO Current Vehicle: 2010 Jeep Wrangler Mountain Edition (2 door) Previous Vehicle: 2003 Ford F150 Lariat Overland Experience: Intermediate/Advanced--I haven't driven internationally yet, but if I had to move into my rig...

    The Colorado Jeep

Thanks for the tip. The Jeep forums all tend to push the 5.13s, with the argument that the Jeep will have enough power maximize OD use, but I agree that would kill highway cruising speed—which is already one of the Jeep’s biggest weaknesses. The idea of 4.56s came in my mind because there is a...

    The Colorado Jeep

Since starting this thread I found a Bestop overhead rack. This is an insanely clever rack system. It mounts rails on the exterior of the Jeep similar to what might be found in a truck bed. The rack bars easily go on and off depending on need. I think the track rails are incredibly useful. I am...

    El Jeepe!

Cool Jeep! My wife is a Geology major at CU Boulder. We recently took our Jeep to Moab with the geology club. There were a couple of geologists with Wranglers out there. Whoever can drive to the most remote, difficult spots gets to find the coolest rocks! I’m a Jeep guy too. Maybe I can’t cruise...

    my overlanding experience

Also, cool truck! I still have my ‘03 f150. Got 265k on the original 5.4 triton. Transmission rebuild at 260k miles. MPGs were much better in that rig than my Jeep. With 3.55 gears, CAI, and a custom program I was getting 22/23 hwy mpgs (33” tires).

    my overlanding experience

Dogs are great for overlanding. My only advice is to be cautious of the rules in different National Parks. Great Sand Dunes allows dogs. Many parks like Tetons & Canyonlands only allow dogs in vehicles on paved roads—so no hiking and no 4x4ing. But as long as National Parks aren’t a priority...

Going International in a Soft Top Jeep

Hey all, I am planning a Baja trip, and also hoping to eventually hit more of Central America and South America in the future. Watching a bunch of videos of these trips people talk about how it’s safe, but to take precautions not to look like an easy target; to prevent “crimes of...

    Arches Utah

There is free camping off the willow springs road with vault toilets. And if you continue down the willow springs 4x4 road (a couple of minor obstacles but nothing crazy) you’ll arrive at the arches back entrance. It skips the line to get in the Park, and you can hit the gift shop and pay your...

What Trail Condition Do You Fear The Most?

Long, straight, paved trails with suggested speed limits over 70. Those are the worst. My lifted short wheelbase Jeep does better than I expected, but comfortably I max out cruising at 70-75. The Jeep is happier around 55-60. If it's a windy day? Get ready for traffic cause I'll be slowing the...

    Unruly people....

It can be tough. Particularly here in CO there is a big difference drinking at 5,000ft vs. 10,000ft elevation. A couple of beers can sneak up on a person. My general approach is to remain positive, enthusiastic, and make subtle but clear comments to address inappropriate behavior. It also helps...
