  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

I ordered my daughters a hammock so they can come out on trips with me and I don't have to lug a tent along. If I can get the woopie slings done Thursday or Friday, I was thinking about heading over to The Pines near New Castle Saturday to test it out. Maybe bring the stuff to fix up a quick...

Roof Top Tent or Ground Tent?

I enjoyed the video. We are a family of 5 that do many types to travel so a RTT isn't practical for us. We have a 10 man Coleman Instant Cabin Tent as well as a 4 man version of the same tent. When I go solo, I usually use my hammock and tarp. These seem to suit us perfectly for now.

Cast Iron or No? (weight right now is not an issue for me)

If you season it with fat (bacon, sausage, hamburger fats for example) washing is less of a concern. I usually use olive oil for an initial season but then after I fix a fatty meat in them, wipe them out with just a paper towel afterward to spread the fast and then heat til it smokes. My season...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

It's after church and I'm antsy so I've been doing a quick maintenance charge on all our vehicle's batteries and also mounted the fire extinguisher in my Xterra. I couldn't find a place I liked better and though it takes away my water bottle spot, I feel better having it onboard and mounted...

    Farm Jack

They can be used to break a tire off the bead should you need to massage the bead lip back straight to get it to seal or remove dirt from the bead if you got some wedged in there when you were aired down. I've used one as a tree wedge, cutting a notch in the tree and jacking it in the direction...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

The wife needed a day to study and blow of steam, so the minion hoard and I loaded up and went to Roanoke in the Xterra. We came back through Bedford so I could check out Blue Ridge Overland's shop there. I got to meet @Adam Schalow , who was manning the counter and he helped me pick out a nice...

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

I'm planning on heading over to check out Blue Ridge Overland Gear tomorrow. Gotta detour through Roanoke in the morning. If anyone wants to meet-up, give me a shout.

Cast Iron or No? (weight right now is not an issue for me)

I carry cast iron to use with my stoves. I just prefer cooking on it to anything else. That said, leave the briquttes at home and learn to use coals from your camp fire instead. You'll never have to worry about not having them and you'll save that weight of the get go. This is my opinion though.

Northern VA / MD Monthly Meetup for Flagpole Knob 9/15-17 - 09/16/2017

I ran it in the spring in a 100% stock Xterra and only tagged a couple skids. It's doable in a stock vehicle.

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

Hey guys, the NoVa group are doing a trip to Flag Pole on the 15-16th. I'm toying with the idea of going, but not 100% sure I can swing it right now. Anyone want to get together one weekend and do something? I was thinking about checking out Blue Ridge Overland Gear in Bedford and I saw on...

Northern VA / MD Monthly Meetup for Flagpole Knob 9/15-17 - 09/16/2017

I RSVP'd as maybe. Depends on how hectic life is when the time comes. Possibly +1 vehicle if I come as a buddy may tag along.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Not to my rig directly, but my deflator wouldn't work on the trail ride last weekend. It wouldn't seat properly on the valve stem because I have the TPMS stems rather than the standard type. I popped the snap ring off and chucked it up in my little lathe and turned the section off the end that...

    George Washington National Forest

Looks like a fun trip. I ran Reddish Knob and Flag Pole from West to East earlier this year. I'm looking forward to getting to do it again! I'm in the VAXC group as well, but haven't managed to make any of the runs. They always seem to fall when I've got other stuff going on.

There's also North River campground in that general area. Its a smaller camp but still nice. I stayed there earlier this year when I ran flag pole.

Western Virginia Monthly Meetup (old thread)

Hey guys, maybe not this month, but how would everyone feel about doing a Blue Ridge Parkway trip? Start on Afton Mountain and ride to the NC State line down near Fancy Gap, Va? Google says it'll take about 5hrs, plus meals and whatnot. There are picnic areas along the parkway and we could...
