  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Ruby, the 1988 Palomino Colt. Turning a boring pop up into an adventure pony...

Did a little more work, got lights wired in and the tongue extension with battery box welded up. License plat is mounted on a hinge so it can swing flat to make sure if we drag the bumper it wont get torn off. Also my wife installed the cool art. Next step is getting the stabilizer jacks...

    Minimum clearance

D4 hightrack... In all seriousness I would shoot for around 12" minimum. That being said a lot of this depends on driving style, my old 1980 Isuzu on 28" Super Swampers locked in the rear and limited slip up front got in and out of lots of places. Including many where it had no business being...

US Northwest Inland Northwest - Coeur d'Alene National Forest overnight

Looks like I can make this one. If anyone needs a radio I have an extra 2Meter hand held.

    Jeep Gladiator Mileage Question

First I would re gear, this will help the engine get and keep things moving as well as reduce strain on the transmission which will aid in its longevity and help keep the rig in the ideal gear which will help maximize fuel economy. Second, 80mph is too fast for any loaded down vehicle. Your Jeep...

    The Rat-Lander

I dont think it will get an RTT, not enough space. As for the rear locker, it already has a limited slip with upgraded springs. Not a locker for sure, but it should keep both rears turning quite well. Anyway, my attention is going to shift back to the trailer build. I will be spending a bit of...

    The Rat-Lander

Well I got the engine and trans out of the donor Benz. I have a gasket kit coming in the mail already so I might start the engine tear down process soon so I can see what else I need to get coming to make sure its 100% before it goes into the 'Vette chassis.

    1959 GMC Bus - 4x4 Build

Super awesome build! For the rear axle, depending on overall weight and HP you could probably run a GM 10.5" 14 bolt. They ran that axle in 15 passenger vans as well as in pickups. They are stout, cheap, and have plenty of parts availability.

    The Rat-Lander

It has been a while since I updated this thread as my wife and I are currently rebuilding an old pop up camper. Anyway this weekend I got my power plant. I ended up going in a different direction due to the cost and weight of the Cummins power plant. So I started looking for a Mercedes Benz...

GMRS: "not impressed" or "we musta been doing something wrong"

Honestly when you are in extremely hilly terrain, CB is better than GMRS, VHF,UHF. Reason being CB is technically HF and as such will bounce and reflect off of things much better, and will even bounce off of the atmosphere. Me I'm not too keen on GMRS because understanding the limitations of...

2020 Ford EcoSport SES "Scout" build

Seeing a lifted one of those guys is nice. I think the proportions of those EcoSports in stock form just seems wrong, but lifted with a larger tire really looks good.

    GMC Terrain Overland Build

As those guys are based off of a car chassis I would imagine you will need to fabricate your own lift. I would take a page from the Sprinter van book, most Sprinter van lifts are simply spacers that go between the power plant sub frame and the body, then spacers for the rear springs (these would...

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

I would check into the "transfer case" before moving forward if its not a factory option. On the Escape the t-case is a compact ring and pinion in an aluminum case that is driven off of the right side front axle shaft. If you were to truly lock up the rear end I could see things not being up to...

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

That is an interesting thought, maybe the FX4 or what ever is planned as more off roady package will do...

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Which it is. I quoted the post from Smiley that shows what appears to be what you are talking about. As the cab and bed are clearly separate it MUST be body on frame. As for the other previously mentioned Hyundai "pickup", yes it is definitely uni body and not what I was referring to.

    Pop-Up Campers

I was amazed how poor the build quality was of our cabinets, my wife is completely rebuilding them to make them stronger. Also the lift system mounting points can be very iffy and would need beefing up, that is our next project. As far as weight goes, our little guy originally is only 1100lbs, I...

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Let me know how that Maverick treats you. I am seriously interested in them, its kind of a bummer that we wont be in the market for another car for a few years at least...

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Looks like an Isuzu D-MAX re badge. If I'm not mistake Hyundai has done this before.

Ford Maverick and the small overlanding pickup truck

Since I have used my Escape as more of a Truck than most people use their trucks for, (regularly tow 3K, occasionally haul 2K of building materials in the back) I have zero hesitation about going after an Escape based "truck". Its basically an Escape with an open cargo area, which for me would...

    Pop-Up Campers

Check out my sig line for our work in progress. It really all depends on what you go with. There are many newer pop ups that are off roadish geared. For the older ones, you will find many (like ours) with a barely adequate torsion axle and small tires. Do your research on lift systems also. The...

Ruby, the 1988 Palomino Colt. Turning a boring pop up into an adventure pony...

We are also stretching the tongue slightly to allow the trailer to go a full 90* to the Escape which will be the tow rig and also allow for some storage on the trailer tongue. The idea here is camp latrine storage. In order to make sure it is strong enough I started boxing in the trailer frame...
