    Hot weather camping

I have a 12v fan for under my awning with my teardrop and run a small mister in the fan. It delivers a nice cool breeze. The teardrop is insulated with 1" of Styrofoam and with the fans inside it is nice even in the heat.

OB Approved Water Crossing: Snorkels and Preparation

I have run a snorkel for 20 years. I got it to keep dust out of the filter, not water. Fording deep water is a recipe for disaster. I have seen dozens of engines ruined due to water. It does not take much moving water to remove all control, even if the motor is still running. Unless your...

OB Approved Becoming a Skilled Spotter

Everybody seems to think they are the worlds greatest spotter. I have been wheeling for way over 30 years and I trust only a few people on the trails we run. I mostly get out and look, plan my line and then make everybody shut up. Very few people, even seasoned drivers can spot well. You...

(for sale) KRONK my obs 99 tahoe. Big, dumb but reliable

Haven't read all the posts to see if you replaced the traction bars but if you haven't please do. Running that many lift blocks puts a heck of a lot of force on the springs and under acceleration or going over bumps things will mover around a lot. You will get a ton of axle wrap and can easily...

    Axle Swap Advice

More important than upgrading the rear axle assy is upgrading the D30 up front. I don't mean replacing it, but at least upgrading the axle shaft on the drivers side. That is the one that breaks the most. I have rock crawled the heck out of my rig for 23 years. I am running Dana 44's locked...

OB Approved CO2 vs. Air Compressors

That is an old wives tail. I have run CO2 for 20 years. I may drop 5 lbs in 6 months.

Not a build as much as a resurrection?

If you haven't put the head back on yet, get a spray can of CopperKote and coat the gasket on both sides. It is old school but it has worked since before the rig was built. Make sure and check the block and head for flatness. I rebuilt my first gas engine 57 years ago and my first diesel 55...

Not a build as much as a resurrection?

My money is on a head gasket. Nothing else would cause two cylinders to go to zero at the same time. While you have the head off, why not grind the valves or at least lap them. On an older vehicle it can make quite a difference. It's not a bad time to put some valve seals on as well. Don't...

What is the best trailer hitch type and its proper application?

I don't like pintle hitches due to the jarring and rattling. I fab'd my own. Check out my trailer build thread.

    St Elmo trip

It is a completely different route. The views from there are much better. I followed a stock Chevy Suburban up at one time so it's not that hard. But if you're afraid of heights and narrow roads you might want to think twice.

    First Basic mods or equipment...

I like all that has been listed, but I highly recommend that any vehicle have recovery points. Wrapping a strap around a sway bar or the like is a recipe for failure or injury.

    St Elmo trip

Did you feed the chipmunks and see the humming birds? I love that place. What kind of vehicle were you running? The pass over to Tin Cup is a bit rough and you need a bit of ground clearance. I hauled my teardrop up to the top of Hancock last fall and spent the night at 12,000 ft. Mt...

Best CO area trails for photography?

If you are up to back country camping, see if you can snag a reservation and run the White Rim Trail in Moab. It is 104 miles of dirt and absolutely breath taking. I recommend spending a minimum of one night on the trail, maybe two. Do some research. It may be hot, but remember the humidity...

    Gass powered fridge

12v is not a problem while driving since your alternator will power the fridge. Propane works good when parked, but the flame has a tendency to blow out when on the road. Solar can provide a charge for your 12v battery while stopped as well. Having all three options is great, but adding the...
