Nomadic 270 installation on a rhino rack pioneer platform questions

Those brackets look far stronger than the brackets that came with my, fairly old, Oztent Foxwing Awning. They are plastic and only hook into the outermost rail. The solution to your problem may be the way I've attached my gas bottle holder, by using aluminium bars to connect to 2 rails on the...

    Trip Planning AUS - US

Sounds like a great trip. Hopefully, you will be able to post lots of detail about your logistical challenges like shipping insurance and covid, so those that follow can learn from your experience. I also hope you can post lots on your destinations in the US when you go there. I'm looking at a...

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

We're back! The Overland Bound Friday Night HAM Radio Net on Echolink will run this Friday evening. The place is the *STARLINK* Echolink conference server. If you had another way to connect in the past feel free to use that. White Mountain Repeater Association has expanded, particularly in...

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

Net controller role: 1. Announce the beginning and start of the net. A script is provided. 2. Take and log of check-ins and log a brief summary of the conversations. 3. Control the order, so that everybody gets their turn. As simple as running down the list. 3. Rarely you may be required to...

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

Let me know if I can include you on the Net Controllers message group. Same for anyone else monitoring this.

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

You are qualified. You have your HAM licence, it just takes a willingness to volunteer. You do need a means of connection to the net (Echolink). I'm happy to help you get set up. I'm sure there are a couple of others. If there's another time that suits more people please suggest it.

    Friday Night HAM Radio NET

So the net hasn't happened for a while. Is anybody interested in the net if it restarts? If so we really need a larger pool of net controllers (not just me). I would be willing to help.

Power to the rear - do I need to run negative of can I ground to frame?

Let's not hijack Ryan's post any further. Both ways have their own advantages and disadvantages depending on use and vehicle. The only things that I would mention are making good electrical connections and correct fuse ratings for the minimum wire gauge used. Keep it safe.

Power to the rear - do I need to run negative of can I ground to frame?

I'd be questioning the +ve side wiring, to the cig lighter socket, for that one.

Power to the rear - do I need to run negative of can I ground to frame?

If your vehicle is newer and has a smart alternator or engine start-stop, you should NOT connect the earth cable to the negative terminal of the battery. There is a sensing circuit between the negative terminal and the vehicle body/chassis. And a direct connection will provide a bypass circuit...

    Overland Vans Section

I think it would be a good idea to include a Vans section under Overland Rigs. There seems to be a fair few members with Vans, be they Sportsmobiles, Delicas or VWs. They don't readily fall into other categories of the Rigs section.

    The overland van man

It's all about just getting out there, so enjoy doing it in the van you have until you decide you need something else to go where you want.

    How about "URBAN"

At first, Urban Overlanding sounds like an oxymoron. But, my view of Overlanding is travelling by land for long distances, across continents and those doing similar will encounter cities and other urban areas, particularly ones they are not familiar with. Maybe it's for repairs, a break or just...

    Electric powered overland vehicle

I own my vehicle for the purpose of travelling to the most remote places, currently in Australia, but hopefully beyond that in the coming years. Having to travel via urban centres every few hundred miles or stay at campgrounds with electricity just to charge batteries isn't part of that plan...

Gear for starting out? (Check my list!)

Never underestimate the value of a large block of wood, something like an offcut from a 6"x2" or 6"x4". It adds height, spreads the load and gives a firm flat base for your jack.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Wired my old solar panels to the Kombi. For the day I can get away. Connects via an Anderson plug so the vehicle can be fully closed while charging.

Let's see some HAM setups in your rigs

I ended up mounting my radios in a centre console. Only 1 HAM rig at present. View from above, in Australia we drive on the right-hand side of the vehicle so the displays are the correct way up for the driver. Definitely not the latest gear. Left is my HF, VKS737/Outpost radio. Top right is my...
