What is YOUR ultimate overland setup, and why?

Ram 3500 Diesel Crew cab with 35” tires and extended range fuel tank and truck bed topper - Fuel efficiency is on par with most smaller trucks that are loaded with all the typical overland stuff. - Relatively simple solid front axle - Tons of power for extended highway trips through the...

    Fridge&Freezer recommendations

I picked up an Engel MT35 in 2003 or 2004. It’s been running at least 85% of the time since and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve had it through numerous trails in Moab in the back of my topless Jeep at least a half dozen times plus hundreds of trail trips in Alberta. When it’s not serving Jeep duty...

Off road mid-size vs off road full size

In my 25 plus years of off-roading experience the lighter the vehicle is the less likely it is to get stuck and easier to get unstuck afterwards.

    They just dont know

A little known fact about the original Hertz Shelby GT 350 rentals. Some of them were rented then returned with evidence that a roll-bar that had been welded in then cut out before giving the cars back. People were renting them and racing them in a sanctioned event that required a roll-bar.

You know the old saying... whats the most fun on two wheels? A rental car!

Let’s be honest; Roof Top Tent- Yay or Nay?

I have considered a RTT, a hard sided enclosed purpose built trailer and a military style trailer with RTT attached. While each were extremely appealing to me I accepted the fact that I’ll only use it once or twice a year for “boys” weekend camping trips. Any camping trip involving my wife also...

    Manual Sway Bar Disconnect

I used JKS quick disconnects on my last 3 TJ’s without issue. Pro tip when reconnecting- like stated above park on level ground and if they’re on a vehicle with a side hinged tailgate like the Jeeps, opening or closing the tailgate will “fine tune” the links when not quite level. I’ve been doing...

    Ultimate full time overlanding rig

I agree on the full size domestic trucks. A 3/4 or 1 ton truck (although I’d stick with the 6-1/2’ box for better maneuverability). Assuming most of the driving is on this continent - Parts are easy to come by and relatively cheap - If equipped with a diesel engine you’ll never worry about...

tweco welder problems, anyone have any ideas?

Are you sure that machine can tig weld aluminum? I have the Tweco 211i and while it is capable of mig, tig and stick welding it cannot tig aluminum. My understanding is there is no machine that can mig weld steel and tig weld aluminum.

12v Fridges when not on the road

I do the same thing. I purchased an Engel in ‘03 or ‘04 and it’s been running at least 90% of the time either in the truck, Jeep or as a spare drink fridge in the house.

    Solid axle versus independent suspension

That video is deceiving with the fact one style has a huge benefit of shock absorbers. I bet the independent suspension would behave quite differently if it didn't have shocks and ditto for the leaf sprung setup if it had shocks. One thing often overlooked on trailers is balancing the tires...

Add an “Oil-Bypass Filter” to your Cummins, etc. Diesel to Prolong Engine life

I’ve been wrenching on my own vehicles for 4 decades and never heard of using a bypass filter, thanks for sharing the knowledge.
