Here is my setup.
iPad Mini2- 64GB 7.9" screen (GSM version) with GAIA GPS maps. Only iPad GSM model has the GPS chip, WIFI models does not. You could connect an external Bluetooth GPS receiver to WiFi model but not worth the hassle. My iPad mini is now old enough that it won't update beyond IOS...
