2011 Xterra low lift w35s build and adventures

Man you jumped right into it with the 35's. watching to see the progress.


I wasn’t going to but they were on such a good sale I just had to, it really took a lot to
convince me lol .

And I’ve been down this road enough times knowing if I go with a smaller tire I will want something bigger within a short amount of time So I might as well start off with the tire I want.

^good to know. i'm sourcing titan swap parts and i'm on the fence between going 33 or 35 with mine. might as well regear too i guess.
 
Got the rest of the liner stretched out and tabs welded in to hold it . My welder half took a crap because the nut that holds the positive terminal on must have loosened up at some point and melted the stud halfway so my welds turned out like crap and I will have to redo some of it later but now it’s time to drink to much and stuff my face with turkey . Initial impressions of the dick Cepek trail country EXP 315/75r16
For being a aggressive AT these things are quiet , small amount of road noise but no annoying droning or MT type whomp whomp whomp noise .
Turning seems no different and with the light tire and wheel combo acceleration seems almost the same , I can still accelerate from 55 in 6th with no issues and driving up the hill to my house is still effortless in 3rd .
It hopefully might snow and freezing rain tonight so I can hopefully give a update on that .

Still need to do more trimming and some spacers for the rear wheels but couldn’t resist a little snow fun after doing a wine club pickup with the fiancé . Tires did well but I didn’t air down enough at first , 16 wasn’t quite enough but they seem to like 12 psi . Got a little hung up in a 4 foot snow drift but thankfully a guy came by in a SAS yoda and broke trail for a couple miles . I know the hype is bigger is better but having done 35s on a Wrangler and gone back to no lift and 7.50R16s..... I'd not recommend 35s or 33s or any of the popular options.

I just dropped from 33x10.50R15s to 7.50R16s. Way smoother ride. Noticeably better braking and from 17mpg to 22mpg. That gives me another 95miles of range between gas stations. I know, I'll get slagged for suggesting 33s, 35s are a bad idea but they are a bad idea. And on a Nissan with 3.69 ratios.... I'd call it undriveable unless you are in 4LO.

I have no problems so far , still cruse 70 on the freeway with minimal throttle input and in the snow only needed 4low in the deeper snow .

I've been in hard core off-roading for nearly 15 years. It defies logic how well the Xterras work with larger tires and what I would consider lacking gearing.

I'm running 285's with 3.13's and it's not bad at all. It does much better than my XJ on 31's and 3.55s. The most common setup among Xterra loyalists is an automatic P4X with 315's and 3.36 gears because a Titan M205 front and towing package is a direct swap in with the Titan suspension swap. I know lots of guys running that setup.

I do want some 3.69's and a locker for my X on 285s for a little more grunt but honestly that'll be where I stop with the X. The 4.0L VQ40DE is a great engine. The VVT gives it such a wide power band and it's large enough for a V6 to have some grunt on the bottom end.
 
I think most people are assuming that the xterra has the normal gutless poweplant if older nissans . A older Nissan like a pathfinder can hardly handle 33s with 4.88 gears . The 4.0 in the xterra is unlike any motor in nissans past suvs.

No I haven’t gotten around to Looking into how to correct it yet , I was going off gps .
You really can't. They average all four wheel speeds and send that to the dash. There is one company that makes a piece you splice into the dash. There are rumors Nissan can actually change it but no one I've heard of has managed to find a dealership that will try. Maybe you'll have some luck to that end. I just multiply my trip mileage by 1.034 (3.4% larger circumference for 285 vs 265).
 
To piggy back on Terry a bit. It may be benefit to take a gander at a Bully Dog Pro to let you adjust the speedo and shift points for different size tires. Among many other things.

I've never heard that the bully dog will correct the speedo on a 2nd Gen.

It does. I have not verified accuracy, but it does change it on 2nd gens. Considering my rig has 4.11 gears and 35's the BDP is darn near a must just to get the shift points where they need to be.
