Ask About Gaia GPS!

Update: Due to time constraints I am no longer going to be working for Gaia on a part-time basis. They are an great group of folks and I WILL still be supporting Gaia in forums and elsewhere as time permits.
When time permits I will also update and write some new blog posts on 4xoa.com. Life has just been busy and I needed to step back from my side gig with Gaia.

Here's a link to save 20% off of your Gaia GPS subscription. A nice amount of savings after any promo you have has run out. So keep the questions coming and thanks again to those that have stepped in to help with questions when I have not been available.

Yes, thank you for the discount link, that knocked off $32 from a 5yr non-recurring plan. Much appreciated! This should be interesting to use on my next long trip cross-country when I stop for local back roads and trails.

Thanks for bringing this up. I just subscribed.

Hey I have a Gaia question, 10 days ago I got a premium membership and today I cancelled it. It shows my membership good through Feb 20 2019 and then in parenthesis "cancelled" after that. Does this mean that it will not automatically renew now? I know I wont get a prorated refund but I absolutely do not want to pay for another year. I payed with a credit card, not google pay.

Thanks in advance for any input

Sounds to me like it won't renew, but it's a question best asked of their support team, really. The 5yr Premium is shown on their site as non-recurring and is one of the reasons I chose it. That and the nice discount, and that I know I'll be using the hell out of it around the country over that period of time.

Why did you choose to cancel?

Email support@gaiagps.com to confirm everything. They also offer refunds if you did not want to renew. So contact support!

Their support team confirmed I will not auto renew and offered a refund or the option to use the year I paid for. It was a prompt and friendly reply. No complaints about their support at all.

Their support team answered my question and confirmed no automatic renew.

I posted my comments about the cancellation in this thread about Gaia with Samsung tablet. In an effort not to spam all the threads, Im attaching a link.

Is Apple still the preferred way to run Gaia? After reading this entire thread it seemed like it definitely used to be, but might not be anymore. I'm planning on getting a tablet to use for my vehicle. I want to run GPS, a scan tool, music, etc through the tablet. What's going to be better for what I want to do, an Android tablet or an Apple tablet? And how much storage would you recommend?

One person will tell you Apple. Another person will tell you Android. I would get a 128GB iPad.

Gaia updated their Android client over a year ago and its kept current with the iOS version now. Choose whichever you prefer and it should be the same experience on the app.

That was another reason I wanted to get a tablet for the vehicle. Something for my son to watch movies or play games on when he gets bored.

I use it on a 128GB iPad Air2, in conjunction with a Bad Elf GPS PRO+.

I also keep all our music on the iPad, which feeds our head unit while overlanding, and I keep 50 iTunes movies on there in case the kids meltdown...

I doubt the Garmin has Bluetooth to connect to other devices. If it does then maybe yes it would work. Find the manual for it.

It does have Bluetooth. Would the Ipad need to have an active SIM card for this to work? Or can I Bluetooth it to the Ipad as-is? And honestly.....I am REALLY sorry for the idiotic questions!!

If you have an iPad with a 3G connection you don't need an external GPS. There is one built in with our without a current plan or sim card. If it is a wifi only iPad or you want to have a more reliable GPS signal a Bluetooth GPS is required. In your case try to connect/pair your iPad with the Garmin unit. Again you may have to find the manual for your unit to find the steps to put it into pairing mode.

Not sure why everyone keeps saying that about the cell equipped ipads... it’s only assisted gps, and as soon as you get off grid, out of cell tower range, it doesn’t work at all.

You need a true bluetooth gps to function well on and off the cell grid. I suppose if you are using Gaia in a metropolis, then you may be ok, but who in the world wants to do that? I prefer to GET AWAY when overlanding...
