You will want the hydro boost brakes over the vacuum style mainly for the increased stopping ability.

Its looking great, will it be running by snow fall? (don't forget a block heater of some sort)

oh and liking the gold engine hoist chain.

I'm hoping I can stay ahead of snow, especially with a motorcycle as my daily ever since the initial failure...

Going to set it up with an intake "grid heater" as well as the block coolant heater it had for it's industrial uses. There are even provisions for an oil preheater element in the sump, doubt I'll go that far though.

The gold chain's doing double duty to both cure my paranoia of this engine's weight & keep me looking fashionable :sunglasses:
 
Had a hell of time with pulling the injectors on this thing, pretty much an hour long wrestling match. But despite losing the battle on that one for the time being I did however get to solving the "Killer Dowel Pin" issue on these engines:

This last week has been getting brutal with a motorcycle as my daily... BUT, I forgot right away about riding home tonight on a seat covered in frost the moment I saw a distinct package sitting in front of my door just now. A shiny new Holset "Super" HX30W Turbocharger for the build! Aside from something bespoke, this is considered the best option for a single charger on these 4-cylinder mechanical Cummins engines. Holding this thing in my hands is really giving me a "This project is finally happening!" kind of feeling :openmouth:

If you were going to do this project, I'd highly recommend a Disco 1 instead of a Disco 2. Parts are much beefier and far less electronics. Swapping a R2.8 or 4BT into my Disco 1 was my plan until I purchased my Defender.

I think the trick is to tear parts off it so often that you won't realize when anything's actually gone wrong :tongueclosed:

Guess I'll be following your lead, time to dive into my motor and see the damage.

Hopefully it's just the intake gasket like mine needed a year or so back, or something simple to get you by til the weather's a bit less harsh.

Had a go at replacing all these funny little break-off bolts on the injection pump before I reinstall. I figured that bashing on it while clamped to a bench beats whacking against it on the engine & risking tweaking the front cover etc. Found it WAY easier to just chisel a groove into the heads then to pound in a T15 torx bit like I had read about. The impact screw extractor tool did the trick. Swapped all the burdensome flat-heads with hex-heads, with the exception of the safety-wire bolts:

Here's what a one of the break-off bolts look like (vs the other flat-heads) before driving a groove in with a chisel:

No idea why they were so keen to secure much of the access to the internals, perhaps to avoid liability with run-away engines? Dunno...
