Southwest Utah Adventure Labor Day Weekend & Week

I am headed to SW Utah for a week of on and off-road travel. Starting in Mexican Hat. Day 0 will be on 8/31. This allows folks from different places to arrive. We will have breakfast at 8am on Saturday and leave Mexican Hat no later than 10am to start the adventure. I know this is short notice and many folks can't get the time off but if you can great! I will be using this trip to plan for a future one next year.

This trip includes portions of the Utah BDR and possibly a section of the Great Western Trail. The only fixed date I have is to be in Capitol Reef on Monday through Wednesday. I have booked a single site at the campground inside of Capitol Reef. Dispersed camping is available nearby but I wanted a safe location to base camp for trail runs on Monday and Tuesday. As of 8/9 there are still a few spots available to reserve at $20 per night. I have site 52 in loop C reserved. There can be 2 vehicles but only 1 trailer.

The trip will start in Mexican Hat and end near Kanab, UT. We will drive through the Valley of the Gods, drive the Moki dugway, camp at or near the Natural Bridges national monument, visit the Capitol Reef area and then drive through the Escalante Grand Stair case area.

While I am happy to provide the route, trail ideas, points of interest and camping areas you are 100% responsibly for your personal safety and vehicle safety. Period! The GPX file has a rough draft of the "loop" and possible side trips.

Rally Point Details:

This is a trailer friendly trip. You must have a 4WD vehicle. Preferably with a lift kit and recovery gear. While most of this trip is split between highway driving and know dirt roads conditions can and will change. 10 or more gallons of spare fuel required. Standard recovery gear required. Traction devices helpful. Some hiking may be involved but not required.

Sample Itinerary - Subject to change based on weather, camping availability, mood...

Day 1 - Valley of the Gods, Moki Dugway, Natural Bridges (camp in bridges or near by on BLM land)
Day 2 - Bridges to Jacobs Chair or Blue Notch Road for camping on the Lake Powell. We may also head closer to Capitol Reef instead
Day 3 - Capitol Reef - Have a reservation in Fruita Campground - Explore the area
Day 4 - Capitol Reef - Cathedral loop - Explore the area
Day 5 - Escalante Grand Staircase - Camping TBD - hike a visit the Lower Calf Creek waterfall
Day 6 - Escalante Grand Staircase - Bryce Canyon area Camping TBD (Possibly Alstrom Point or Kodachrome Park)
Day 7 - Leave via Cottonwood Canyon Road south or GWT to 89. We will then take the backway via dirt to the AZ border near Vermillion Cliffs to complete the trip.

Ham preferred but we can also communicate via CB.

I don't talk politics. It is pointless. Believe what you want to believe. Instead enjoy conversations about this area and overlanding in general. If you can't resist then this trip is not for you. If you are unwilling to help your fellow travelers if they need help this trip is not for you.

We can work on group meals depending on the number attending. You MUST be flexible with the itinerary. Things can and will change. We may make more or less progress on any given day. This is not a minute by minute guided tour. While I have traveled some of these sections most I have not. This is a great opportunity to explore an incredible section of Utah.

Anyone attending will receive more detailed information including GPX tracks, park links, PDF brochures etc.
