Old Ore Road: not for passenger cars
Old Ore Road is a very scenic 4x4 trail located in Big Bend National Park, in Texas, USA. The road is 26 miles long. Used in the early 1900s to transport ore from Mexican mines to the railroad station at Marathon, the Old Ore Road generally follows the route used by mule and pack trains a century ago. It’s one of the famous primitive dirt roads in the Big Bend National Park.
The road is rocky and sandy. It’s a 4x4 trail and the speed limit is 25 mph. It’s a long, scenic road that provides close-up views of the hills and mountains to the east and was once a mining transport route. Allow a half-day or more. Passing through the foothills of the Dead Horse Mountains, the Old Ore Road usually requires a high-clearance vehicle; four-wheel drive is strongly recommended due to some rugged terrain. The road has excellent views of the Chisos Mountains across the Tornillo Creek drainage to the west. Ernst Tinaja, five miles from the southern end of the road, is a popular destination.
