This tire was brand new (when I put it on my spare tire carrier 12 years ago). When I needed it, last week, it would still hold 50psi. This is a photo of it after 1 mile on a dirt road...

NOTE TO SELF: Rubber doesn't like sun ;-)
It would probably have been fine if you aired down and drove slower. Keep in mind it's an old tire and called a spare for a reason. Drive slower and more careful with spares if they are old.

I've read that you shouldn't keep your tires no longer then 10 years. I finally replaced my 13 year old spare tire with a $90 Primwell AT tire made in China.

If they sit in the sun all day, especially a spare, in the Southwest, I'd say 5 years.

I said gut because thats what I do. I watch them and look for signs. Uneven wear, tread dropping below what i feel is safe, cracks in sidewalls or dry rot. If I start to see signs, I replace them. I also feel especially for overland that one shouldn't piece meal it. When one gets down or cracked (assuming it isn't new with a flaw or damage), I replace all 4. YMMV, we all have different methods!
