Hey everyone,
Wondering how I should store tap water in a container that I am going to keep in my vehicle for a few months. The water here is treated, but should I also treat it with anything myself before storing it so long? TIA -Josh

I have an 11 gallon footwell water tank that stay full all the time. I top it off after every outing.

Probably good practise to top out the container and add an eggcup full of sterilising fluid every so often such as Milton. Milton won’t kill you but makes the water smell a bit like chlorine. If your container is opaque you should be ok,if it’s white and the light can get through you could have slime growing in there. Personally I would drop the water out and inspect the container and then put some fresh in.

While I do not store for months, I did upgrade my cooking and drinking water jug. Also partially because I am removing as much plastic as possible from food.

I now use these. Have two to cover longer trips.

After reading this post, it made me think of the old Army field sanitation training. And how much we don’t think about these things often. So a quick google search refreshed my memory! This site has good reference info.

The only question I thought of was “why” long term in the vehicle? Me personally, I drain/purge my tank after every trip and let it air dry then close it back up till the next adventure.
Whatever your reasons, just keep it dark, and change out every six months or so.
My 2 cents!

We have a 375 gal water tote for times of emergency in one of our out buildings. The link above is a good guide which we follow and have never had a problem storing for 6 months or more.
